De Kwakel offers a variety of discoveries: traces of history at Fort bij de Kwakel, a circular walking route and the festive tradition of Kwakelse Kermis. A simple distinction can help with your planning: would you like to set aside time for a walk, solve puzzles or learn more about the history of a festival? The answers lead to different highlights and make it easier to tailor your stay to your interests.

Fort bij de Kwakel: Gun Emplacement and Water Supply

The visitor attractions at Fort bij de Kwakel include the Fort K escape room. In the green rampart surrounding the fort is a concrete gun emplacement, a battery oriented towards the road to Vrouwenakker. A deferrization facility was used to make groundwater drinkable. These different functions sit side by side: a present-day puzzle attraction, a defensive structure aimed at a road and a former technical solution for water supply. Visitors interested in the site can distinguish its architectural and technical aspects, rather than viewing the fort from just one perspective.

Puzzle Activities and Circular Walking Route

At Bamboelabyrint Nirwana, the maze covers 2,500 m². Options include a picture search, a puzzle tour based on sayings and a multiple-choice search at different levels. The activities take different forms; which one appeals to you depends on whether you prefer searching for pictures, deciphering sayings or choosing answers. Individual search formats may change, so check the current offerings before your visit. The play hill “De ruïne van Steenwyck” is accessible only with a ticket for Bamboelabyrint. You should also check the applicable ticket conditions in advance.

If you would rather cover a route on foot, you can plan to walk the Fortenpad: the circular walking route is 8 km long and takes about two hours. Landscape and historical highlights include the reused forts on the Drecht and near De Kwakel; both are part of the Stelling van Amsterdam. The approximate walking time gives you an idea of how long the loop takes. The Vuurlijn is also part of the Stelling van Amsterdam. The same historical theme can therefore be encountered in different contexts, while the Fortenpad offers a specific walking option with a stated distance and duration.

Kwakelse Kermis: Harvest Festival and Parade

Kwakelse Kermis originated in the first half of the 19th century as a harvest festival associated with growing vegetables and flowers and producing peat. Its origins therefore differ from the architectural traces of the forts: here, the tradition of the festival and the agricultural and peat-related activities of the time are the backdrop. The children's parade was first held in 1898 and has taken place every year since, with exceptions such as during the Second World War. Elaborate floats depict current events, history and topics from television programmes and films. They use slogans, sets and costumes. If the Kermis is the reason for your visit, check the specific festival dates before travelling.
