A 3.1-kilometre planetary trail at the Streekbos pavilion and the Orion Public Observatory reveal two different sides of Bovenkarspel: nature trails and astronomy. If you are considering the town as a place to stay, you can first decide whether trails and nature, astronomy or technological history will shape your visit.

Hiking trails and nature in Streekbos

Streekbos has several hiking routes along paths that are partly paved and partly unpaved. Current conditions can vary seasonally. The Ecoproject offers a different perspective: this area of Streekbos puts the development of nature centre stage. Its walking route can be used in all seasons; sturdy footwear may be needed during wet periods.

Ecological management in the Ecoproject supports high biodiversity, with numerous plant species as well as butterflies, dragonflies, birds, hedgehogs and mice. In addition to the walking route, the area therefore offers a clear connection to the development of nature.

Streekbos also has activities on the water. There is a dog swimming area beside the car park on Weelenpad; local usage rules may change, so check them before your visit. A fishing spot is also accessible to people with disabilities, and there is a launch and retrieval point for boats.

Observatory, planetarium and planetary trail

The Orion Public Observatory in Bovenkarspel has an observatory. Various films are shown in the planetarium, where you can view the starry sky indoors, whatever the weather. Orion also offers a range of talks and presentations for groups, family outings and businesses.

The Orion Public Observatory’s planetary trail runs for 3.1 kilometres past the planets of our solar system. It starts at the Streekbos pavilion in Bovenkarspel, where the Sun marks the starting point; each planet has a short explanation. The route thus combines a set distance with brief information stops. Unlike the planetarium, the information here follows a route; indoors, the focus is on films and viewing the starry sky whatever the weather.

Climbing courses and mini golf

Klimpark Streekbos has four courses among the treetops, reaching heights of up to nine metres. The climbing park also has an 18-hole mini-golf course. This means there are two different activities side by side: courses among the treetops and mini golf.

Technology and history

At De Overhaal in Broekerhaven, visitors can see how barges were once moved between the polder and the harbour. The facility is a functioning piece of engineering and was restored in 1993. Ceres Windmill in Bovenkarspel offers another link to the history of technology: it has been in operation since 1848.

Planning food and accommodation

At the Streekbos pavilion, Restaurant IJgenweis serves an extensive dinner featuring regional products. Menu details may change, so check the latest information before making plans.

When looking for a hotel in Bovenkarspel, it helps to decide in advance whether nature trails, astronomy or mill history will be the main focus of your stay.
