Opperdoes brings together architectural and village history with its own potato-growing tradition. The late Gothic Dorpskerk and the historic station building tell different chapters of the village’s story; there are also exhibitions, memorial sites and routes in the surrounding area. This variety can help you choose your own priorities when planning your stay: would you like to focus mainly on history, discover regional specialties or make time for the outdoors?
Village Church and Railway History
The Dorpskerk van Opperdoes was probably rebuilt after the village was plundered by Grote Pier in 1517. Inside is an ornate pulpit dating from 1688. Behind the church is the restored Kerkeboetje, once a boiler house. Today, it serves as a quiet space that visitors may enter.
The station building is also part of the history of the Hoorn–Medemblik local railway line. It was completed in 1887, along with the railway, and remained in operation until passenger services were discontinued in 1935. Of the ten original station buildings on the line, eight remain; the building in Opperdoes is one of them. Between Twisk and Opperdoes is also the “Authentieke mijl”, a section of the local railway line meticulously designed to look as the line did about 100 years ago.
Exhibitions, Archive and Remembrance
An exhibition is held every month at ’t Oûwe Jeugdgeboûw. During opening hours, you can access a library and an archive containing old books from Opperdoes, yearbooks and photographs. Galerie De Pieper hosts exhibitions featuring glass and ceramic art. Anyone interested in discovering different aspects of cultural life in the village will find both historical materials and works of art here.
Another place of remembrance is the Opperdoes war memorial: a commemorative stone, unveiled in 2012, is set into the wall of the Dorpshuis. It is dedicated to the resistance group associated with around 100 people who were in hiding in the village. Local neighborhood associations also shape community life: most districts have active associations that traditionally decorate their areas every five years for Koningsdag and for the commemorations on 4 and 5 May.
Potatoes and Local Character
The Opperdoezer Ronde is closely associated with the village: this potato variety may only be grown in Opperdoes, in North Holland, and is still harvested here by hand. At the Opperdoezer Ronde Toko, visitors can try the famous potato locally. This makes it possible to experience the agricultural tradition not only as part of the village’s history, but also through a specific culinary discovery. Opperdoes is also known for its so-called “vaarboerderijen”.
Routes and Surroundings
For an active stay, there are numerous cycling and walking routes in and around Opperdoes; lakes, canals and various nature areas nearby also offer opportunities for leisure. One named walk is “Rondje Medemblik”: it follows the Westfriese Omringdijk towards Twiske and returns via Opperdoes. Check the route of “Rondje Medemblik” before setting out.
These different themes can be treated as options, not as a prescribed itinerary: church and railway history sit alongside a regional potato specialty and opportunities for outdoor activities. This allows you to tailor your stay in Opperdoes to your own interests, without having to turn the individual places and themes into a fixed day plan.
