Hoogkarspel offers plenty to explore for a trip focused on cultural history and outdoor activities. A war memorial, a water tower dating from 1930, circular walking routes and a cycling route each offer a different focus. You can plan your stay around specific themes: local remembrance, architectural history, walking or cycling.
Remembrance and architectural history
Hoogkarspel’s war memorial commemorates seven residents who lost their lives in acts of war during the occupation. It is located at the corner of Kranenburglaan and Julianastraat. Its precise location identifies the memorial site, while its dedication draws attention to the seven residents and the occupation years.
The listed monuments can also be divided into two groups: Hoogkarspel has five national monuments (Rijksmonumenten) and five municipal monuments (gemeentelijke monumenten). The Hoogkarspel water tower is at Streekweg 235 and was built in 1930. The precise address is useful for finding your way around, while the construction date places the building in Hoogkarspel’s history.
Plant life at De Reigersbek
A description dated 4 June 2024 characterizes the Heemtuin De Reigersbek in Hoogkarspel by its choice of plants: it consists exclusively of plants found in the Netherlands. Here, the focus is on plant life, while the cultural sites mentioned above are shaped by remembrance and architectural history. If you are looking for a nature theme while planning your trip, this offers a clear point of interest.
Walking and cycling
The Groene Reiger Route passes through Hoogkarspel and is seven kilometres long. It was officially established in 2020; check the local signposting before setting out. A route network map from July 2023 shows the Groene Reigerroute as signposted clockwise. The distance and direction provide two different points of reference for planning your walk.
The same route network map from July 2023 shows Hoogkarspel railway station as the starting point for marked circular walks in the Westfriesland walking network. The map also shows the Cor Schipperpadroute, which continues via Landpad and Streekweg towards the centre of Hoogkarspel.
For cycling, there is the 20-kilometre Doortraproute De Streek. It passes through Hoogkarspel as well as Lutjebroek, Grootebroek and Bovenkarspel. It is worth checking the route information before setting off. In direct comparison, this gives you a seven-kilometre walking route through Hoogkarspel and a 20-kilometre cycling route through four named places.
