When planning a trip to Julianadorp Aan Zee, it is worth looking beyond the beach: the coast and dunes, seasonal flower attractions, and the village’s history each offer a different focus. The time of year and the excursions you have in mind can help you fit these themes into your plans.
Beach Access and Dune Landscape
Strandslag Julianadorp is Julianadorp Aan Zee’s largest and best-known beach access point. There is a large pavilion on the beach and a supervised beach patrol; the beach also holds the Blue Flag. Beach facilities and seasonal supervision may change. So check the latest information on facilities and supervised hours before your visit.
The dunes are also part of the landscape: the Noordduinen at Julianadorp are part of the Duinen Den Helder-Callantsoog Natura 2000 area. The North Sea lies beyond the broad Noorderduinen and can be reached from Julianadorp Aan Zee by bicycle via the beach access points. The protected dune area and the beach access points are therefore two distinct aspects of the coastal landscape.
Take the Kustbus to the Beach
During the summer season, Kustbus route 851 runs from Den Helder railway station to Strandslag Julianadorp. From the Strandslag Noordzee bus stop, it is a ten-minute walk to the beach. For a beach visit, this combines a seasonal bus journey with a walk. As seasonal services and route numbers may change, it is a good idea to check the latest timetable before setting off.
Village History in Julianadorp
Loopuytpark is the historic heart of Julianadorp. The village’s history also takes us back to 1909: Julianadorp was named after the newborn Princess Juliana, and the foundation stone of the village church was laid on October 8 of that same year. The naming and the laying of the foundation stone took place in the same year, but relate to different aspects of the village. Together with Loopuytpark, they offer concrete starting points for exploring the village’s history alongside the coastal attractions.
Spring Blooms and Tulips
In spring, Floratuin Julianadorp offers a flowering display garden featuring daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and other bulb flowers. The timing of the blooms varies from year to year. Hundreds of tulip varieties grow in the Tulpen-Pluktuin, where visitors can pick their own bouquet from April 1 to mid-May. As seasonal dates may change, check the latest information about the picking season in advance.
Floratuin also offers workshops centered on flowers. Tours of the business are available by appointment. Before your trip, confirm whether a workshop or tour is available.
Surfing and Canoeing
Surfschool High5 teaches the basics of surfing right by the sea. Lessons start on the beach near Pavilion Paal 6. As they are weather-dependent, you should book a lesson or confirm it in advance.
Camping Julianadorp rents out canoes on the canoe route in Julianadorp. They are suitable for young and older paddlers, as well as experienced and inexperienced ones. The two activities also differ in how they need to be planned: for surfing, the weather and lesson confirmation are important; for canoeing, you should check availability in advance.
Bakery in Julianadorp
Bakkerij Slijkerman offers artisan bread, homemade cookies and pastries at Winkelcentrum de Riepel in Julianadorp. Visitors can browse and sample the products. As opening arrangements and product selection may change, check what is available before your visit if needed.
