In Dussen, you can choose from a range of themes: castle history, polder management, clog-making and nature. Kasteel Dussen and the Noordeveldse Molen reveal different aspects of local history, while Kornsche Boezem and “Rondje Dussen” are all about landscapes and walking. A 36-kilometre cycling route also starts in Dussen. When planning your visit, you can first decide whether to focus on culture, nature or a route with a specific distance.

Castle, mill and clog-making

Kasteel Dussen has a castle garden and a Tuscan colonnade in the courtyard dating from the 16th century. The colonnade is still open to visitors. You can take a guided tour lasting about an hour or explore the castle on your own. The guided tour gives you an approximate timeframe for planning your castle visit. Check current visiting arrangements before you travel, as they may change.

The Noordeveldse Molen, a polder mill built in Dussen in 1795, offers a different historical perspective. It is the last surviving one of seven polder mills that drained the polder near Dussen from 1470 onwards. The focus here is on water management: the mill’s history is linked to draining the polder and the seven former mills.

Traditional clog-making is another cultural activity in Dussen. Peter den Dekker demonstrates the entire process, from wood to finished clog; demonstrations are subject to arrangements with the organiser. Klompenmakerij Den Dekker in Dussen also offers demonstrations and workshops. Other options include children’s birthday parties and day trips. Check with the operator in advance to confirm which activities are available on your chosen date.

Nature, walking and cycling routes

The Kornsche Boezem nature reserve covers 42 hectares. It is characterised by old willow stands and wet hay meadows. Notable plant species include water soldier, marsh marigold and marsh lousewort. If you are interested in the landscape, you will find both a range of habitats and specific plant species named here.

The “Rondje Dussen” walking route runs along the Bergsche Maas and through the Kornsche Boezem nature reserve. For cycling, the 36-kilometre Fietsroute door Het land van Altena starts in Dussen and passes through Hank, Nieuwendijk, Werkendam and Almkerk, among other places. The routes offer different highlights: the walking route takes in the river and nature reserve, while the cycling route has a stated distance and passes through several named towns.
