Steenbergen is one of the fortified towns of the Zuiderwaterlinie. Fortifications, churches and routes offer different ways to shape your stay: you can explore the history of the architecture or focus on walking and cycling routes, as well as a passage by canoe.
Fort Henricus and visible traces of fortifications
From the observation tower at Fort Henricus, you can see the star-shaped fortress and the vast polders of West Brabant. In the townscape, restored bastions, the distinctive Liniegracht canal and the repaired fortress wall make the town’s rich history visible. The view across the landscape from the fort and the visible elements of the fortifications in town thus offer different perspectives on the town’s history.
The inner grounds are accessible to wheelchair users and visitors with pushchairs only with assistance, due to the soft surface; the ramparts and tower are not accessible for these users. Check these access conditions before your visit, especially if you are travelling with a wheelchair or pushchair.
Walking and cycling routes
The 25 km “Route Blauwe Sluis” walking route leads through the varied polder landscape of Kruisland, Steenbergen and Dinteloord. It is signposted using the walking-route network’s junctions and can be started at any point. Its length, route and the three towns it passes through give the walk a clear framework, without requiring you to start at a specific point.
The “Cruijslandse Krekenroute” offers a different perspective as a cycling route: it passes through an extensive agricultural area, along waterways, through historic villages and to viewpoints. It is signposted using the junctions of the Dutch cycling network; this route can also be started at any point.
The options therefore combine different activities and landscapes: a 25 km walk through the polder region or a cycling route with waterways, historic villages and viewpoints. Another walking route, the “Vliegeniersroute”, starts in Steenbergen.
Waterways and churches
At Blauwe Sluis, canoeists can pass under the Beatrix Sluis. From there, you can paddle from the Cruyslandse Kreken to the Bovensas. This is a separate water route alongside the walking and cycling routes, offering another way to experience the area.
The churches are also among Steenbergen’s cultural highlights. The Gummaruskerk is one of the significant later works in the career of Dr P. J. H. Cuypers. The design as built was adapted and realised by his son Joseph Cuypers and Jan Stuyt. The N.H. church, also known as the Witte Kerk, is well worth a visit too.
