In Schaijk, cycling routes, a walking trail and cultural-historical traces offer practical starting points for planning your trip. The cycling options range from two family-friendly routes to a mountain biking route; on foot, a trail leads through the centre and part of the nature reserve. You can compare the options by activity and the distances given.
Cycling routes with different distances
The Familiefietsroute Docus de Das Schaijk consists of two family-friendly routes of 23 and 7 kilometres. The two routes differ in length by 16 kilometres. The route runs mostly along cycle paths and through forests. The blue route of the Familiefietsroute is also suitable for inline skaters and people with disabilities. Check local conditions before setting out.
Another cycling option is the Rondje Schaijkse Heide mountain biking route: it is 32.7 kilometres long and runs around Schaijk. The route passes the nature core zone and grazing area of De Maashorst. Its distance is greater than both distances given for the Familiefietsroute; the type of route also differs. This lets you consider route length and type of ride as separate selection criteria.
On foot through the centre and nature reserve
The Komwandeling centrum Schaijk is a 5-kilometre walking trail through the centre of Schaijk and part of the local nature reserve. It also passes through the Moesbos, a nature reserve in the middle of a residential neighbourhood. Numerous buildings of cultural and historical interest stand along the route in Schaijk; many have been preserved in an authentic condition. The walk therefore takes in a nature reserve and residential surroundings as well as historic buildings—making it different in focus from the tours described by cycling style and distance.
De Maashorst as a regional natural landscape
De Maashorst provides a broader natural context. Its landscape includes forests, heathland, fen areas, streams, drifting sand and farmland. Wisents, Exmoor ponies and Taurossen have lived there since 2016. While the mountain biking route specifically passes the nature core zone and grazing area, the regional perspective reveals a wider range of landscape features and animal species. This allows you to distinguish a specific route connection from the wider landscape.
Traces of cultural history
The historic grave monuments in Schaijk include tombstones dating from 1629 to 1731. The tombstone of Claas Hermens dates from 1674 and offers insights into the lives and customs of earlier generations. The broad date range and the individually dated tombstone provide different points of reference in time if you are interested in the history of the place.
