Zegge can be explored through two distinctive themes: sacred architectural history and routes. The O.L. Vrouw van Zegge Chapel combines a history dating back to the 15th century with a building constructed in 1922. The H. Maria Boodschap Church offers a second architectural connection to Jacques van Groenendael. The routes focus on specific distances, Quirinus sites, and the link between religious heritage and nature. This lets you choose between architectural history, a walk with a clearly stated distance, and a route passing through several places for your trip.

Sacred Architecture in Zegge

The O.L. Vrouw van Zegge Chapel is a listed national monument (Rijksmonument). Its history dates back to the 15th century; the chapel building was constructed in 1922. Jacques van Groenendael designed it in a simple Neo-Gothic style. The H. Maria Boodschap Church in Zegge was built as early as 1911 to a design by the same architect and is Neo-Gothic. This makes it possible to compare the two buildings through their shared designer. The church was built eleven years before the chapel building, even though the chapel’s history stretches further back. The style descriptions also highlight a difference: the chapel is simple Neo-Gothic, while the church is Neo-Gothic. The architectural history and construction dates provide two distinct points of reference; the Rijksmonument status applies to the chapel.

Routes with Different Highlights

The 12.5 km Quirinus Route passes through the outskirts of Zegge and Oudenbosch. It leads to the site of a former Quirinus well and to a chapel dedicated to Quirinus. The route thus features two distinct Quirinus connections: the site of the former well and the chapel’s dedication. The Sint-Franciscus Route runs through Rucphen, Schijf, Sprundel, St. Willebrord, and Zegge. It takes in religious heritage sites as well as beautiful natural scenery, and is fully marked with signs bearing an image of Saint Francis. By comparison, the Quirinus Route has a clearly stated distance and identifies two Quirinus connections; the Sint-Franciscus Route is defined by its path through five places, its signage, and its cultural and natural highlights.

Hiking by Distance

“De Geheimen van Zegge” comprises three walks measuring 10.5 km, 4.5 km, and 3.7 km. The shortest and longest options differ by 6.8 km, with the 4.5 km route in between. This selection offers different distances that can be compared directly. Café Kerkzicht, which dates back to 1880, is a stop on all three walks. It is therefore a shared point of reference, while the overall distances differ considerably.

Another Local Point of Interest
