In Oss, diverse landscapes meet a city history that is easy to explore. Herperduin lies between Oss and Herpen, while museums, churches, mills and works of art offer insights into the city’s past and present. When planning your visit, you can focus on nature experiences or cultural attractions—or combine several of them.

Nature and landscapes around Oss

Herperduin covers about 400 hectares and includes forests, heathland, marshes and drifting sand. On the edge of the De Maashorst nature reserve, you can enjoy long walks and cycle rides through heathland and alongside gravel pits. The area is also known for its herds of wild animals and badger setts. Walking and cycling routes in Oss can also take you through sandy forests, along the Maas dike, across floodplains and through open polders.

At Keent, a nature reserve in a former branch of the Maas, visitors can roam through floodplains and along unpaved paths. More than 100 Tauros cattle graze there year-round, naturally increasing biodiversity and keeping vegetation short. Herperduin, De Maashorst and Keent thus offer different landscape features, from heath and woodland to gravel pits, river floodplains and unpaved paths.

Museums, landmarks and city history

Villa Curiossa presents museum-quality masterpieces and special objects belonging to Oss residents to tell the city’s story. Museum Jan Cunen is housed in the listed Villa Constance. Its collections include 19th-century Dutch art and contemporary art, while the history of Oss is also a central theme. Those interested in the city’s history can explore it in different ways: through objects from residents’ lives and through art collections in a historic villa.

The Grote Kerk Oss is officially named De Onze Lieve Vrouw Onbevlekt Ontvangen Kerk. It was built between 1857 and 1859 and was listed as a Rijksmonument in 1976. A group can climb the 58-metre-high tower with a guide from the Vrienden van de Grote Kerk; arrangements may change. The Zeldenrust mill dates from 1860 and is also listed as a Rijksmonument. Following restoration, it was put back into operation in 1978.

Art and industrial history are also part of the city’s story. The Farmacie mural on the Organon factory wall in Oss is about 12 metres high and 65 metres wide. Bergoss grew from a cotton-wool factory founded in 1856 into a carpet factory; the Bergoss office can be seen on the Bergoss site. The Titus Brandsma memorial was created by Theo van der Nahmer and installed in front of Titus Brandsma Lyceum in 1957.

City walks and cycling routes

The “De Bende van Oss” city walk is 3 kilometres long and starts at Kruisstraat 36. It explores the links between Oss’s industrial dependence, unemployment, poverty and crime. Guided cultural walks also reveal local history through notable places, anecdotes and fascinating stories.

For a comparison of route lengths, there are three options: the archaeological story trail in central Oss is 2.3 kilometres long, “De Bende van Oss” is 3 kilometres, and the “Een Rondje Oss” walking route is 4.5 kilometres. Check availability before setting out on the story trail or city walk. For “Een Rondje Oss,” check the latest route information, as route documents may be revised.

The Molenfietstocht in the municipality of Oss is on a different scale: this 67-kilometre cycle route follows the cycling junction network to ten mills. It is clearly distinct from the shorter route options. When comparing routes, you can first choose by mode of transport and length, then decide whether to focus on archaeological stories, the city’s history or mills.

Getting here and practical planning

Oss has three railway stations and good bus connections. Check timetables separately when planning your journey or travel within the region. The city routes and tower have different conditions: availability should be checked for some routes, and climbing the tower requires a group and a guide from the Vrienden van de Grote Kerk.
