Open village centre and architectural history

Den Hout can be explored through several distinct themes: an open village centre, architectural and religious history, and landscape and activities. The Houtse Heuvel is an elongated, triangular open space and forms the village’s central area. The space is entirely free of buildings. The combination of its central role and open character is what defines the Houtse Heuvel; its elongated triangular shape gives the village centre a clear profile. This means the focus is not solely on a single building, but also on the shape of the open space itself.

A distinct architectural highlight is Sint Cornelius Church. It is a three-aisled neo-Gothic cruciform basilica with a west tower in early Gothic forms. The two style labels describe the building more precisely: the church is neo-Gothic, while the west tower’s forms are early Gothic. This makes it possible to read the architecture more precisely than by using the general term “church” alone. Sint Cornelius Church was decommissioned in 2016. If visiting the interior is important to you, check access in advance.

The Holy Oak: age and tradition

The Holy Oak adds another layer of history to the village. It is estimated to be 750 years old. A Holy Oak was already mentioned at this location around the middle of the 16th century; it cannot be proven whether this referred to this tree or a predecessor. The tree may once have borne a crucifix.

A landscape with different areas

Another highlight is the Linie van Den Hout. It is a zigzag-shaped line and a former floodplain in Oosterhout and Breda. There is a dragonfly habitat within the line. The designated areas also vary: most of it is designated as a walking area, while a small part is designated as a restricted nature core. The contrast between the walking area and the restricted nature core is part of this landscape’s distinctive character. The former flood-control function, a specific habitat, and the different designations of the areas thus sit side by side here.

Activities and timing your visit

Boerengolf De Houtse Linies offers a clearly defined activity. The course has nine holes and is 1.6 kilometres long; it is laid out in the meadows around the Verhoef family’s farm and the Houtse Linies. The number of holes and the course length give the activity a specific scope. Alongside architectural and local history, the course provides a clear, active alternative.

The De Hoop windmill currently grinds grain on a voluntary basis. If this milling activity matters for your travel dates, check in advance whether it will be taking place then.

The Jaarmarkt Festival Den Hout has been held for more than 40 years. If you want it to determine the timing of your trip, check the specific event dates before basing your holiday rental search on them.
