Nuenen offers a glimpse into Vincent van Gogh’s time in the village, as well as walks and cycling routes in the surrounding area. Options range from a museum and a free treasure hunt to guided walks and longer cycling routes. When planning your stay, you can focus on cultural history, nature or outdoor activities.

Van Gogh in Nuenen

The permanent exhibition at the Van Gogh Village Museum explores the artist’s time in Nuenen. His first masterpiece, “De aardappeleters” (“The Potato Eaters”), is depicted in a film there. At the “Vincents Lichtlab,” visitors can experiment with different lighting techniques. An admission ticket includes access to the museum, the light lab and the temporary exhibition; check the current ticket inclusions before your visit.

Visitors can also enjoy the free treasure hunt “Op zoek naar Vincent.” It is available in Dutch, English, French and German. This playful activity and hands-on lighting experience complement the themes of the permanent exhibition, giving you different ways to explore the museum.

Guided walks and nature

The guided “Dorpswandeling” through Nuenen takes place on Saturdays and Sundays and is about 1.5 kilometres long. The guided “Natuurwandeling” passes through the natural surroundings of Nuenen associated with Van Gogh and measures about 3.5 kilometres. Their lengths offer a straightforward way to compare the two walks. Check the current schedule for guided activities before travelling.

Visitors who want to explore Van Gogh’s footsteps independently can use the route booklet “Op pad met Vincent.” It leads to 20 information panels related to Vincent van Gogh. The first walking route of Van Gogh Nationaal Park also passes through Nuenen and by several Van Gogh monuments. The “Van Gogh NP wandelroute Nuenen” walking route is marked with signs reading “Van Gogh Nationaal Park”; these are positioned below the regular numbered junction signs.

Nearby, Nuenens Broek offers a different landscape: this wet woodland has very soggy soil, with alder and willow trees in abundance, and walking trails run through the nature area. The Hooidonkse Beek crosses Nuenen from southeast to northwest and flows into the Dommel at Hooidonk. It drops by more than seven metres, which means it flows almost constantly.

Cycling routes and mills

The 49-kilometre “Van Gogh fietsroute Nuenen” passes highlights in and around Nuenen. Named stops include the Van Gogh Village Museum, the Van Gogh Kerkje and the house associated with “De aardappeleters.” Another cycling tour, “Fiets en proef van Brabantse bodem,” runs for 21.6 kilometres through Nuenen. The stated distances make it easy to compare the two routes.

Just outside Nuenen, the “Van Gogh-Roosegaarde fietspad” runs between the Opwettense and Collse Watermolen. Its play of light and colour is inspired by “De Sterrennacht” (“The Starry Night”). The Opwettense Watermolen is a Van Gogh Monument located between Nuenen and Eindhoven. On a culinary cycling route, “’t Nuenens Zuivelhuisje” is a stop where you can get fresh milk straight from the tap, homemade cheese and eggs. Route stops and offerings may change, so check the latest information before setting out.

A glimpse of village history

Places beyond the Van Gogh attractions also tell the story of Nuenen. The Dorpspomp has cultural and historical value as a distinctive example of the development of rural water supply. The Dorpslinde is associated with the year 1632, when it was planted. In Van Gogh’s time, Nuenen had many weavers’ houses; one is noted as a weavers’ house from that period. Vincent van Gogh’s father was a pastor at a church in Nuenen.

The De Roosdonck mill in Nuenen is currently used by volunteers to grind grain; its operating arrangements may change. If you are interested, check the latest information in advance. Together with the historic sites, museum and marked routes, it offers a varied picture of Van Gogh connections, village history and landscape.
