In Lith, there are plenty of ways to shape your stay, from historic buildings and paths through the polders to the museum boat de Schokker. Your choice depends on whether you are interested in architecture and local history, planning a hike or would like to explore Lith by bike. Some visits are subject to specific conditions: Molen Zeldenrust is open to visitors when the blue pennant is raised; you should check with the operator in advance about a trip on the museum boat.
Mills, churches and local history
Molen Zeldenrust is a round, stone-built Dutch windmill, also known as a ground-sailer. It dates from 1800 and was built on the old foundations of a mill that had probably stood there for centuries. A blue pennant indicates that visitors can enter the mill. Check this access condition locally before your visit.
The churches also reflect different periods of construction and historical connections. The Kerk aan de Rivier dates from 1953. The R.K. St. Lambertuskerk was built in 1900 in the Neo-Gothic style and, together with its cemetery, is a Rijksmonument. The Mariakapel offers another architectural link to local history: it was designed by Jan de Jong, an architect of the Bossche School who was born and raised in Lith. Parts of the chapel were built using hand-moulded bricks from the Nederlands Hervormde kerk. This church was completely destroyed by a V-1 on 14 January 1945.
The residential paths in Lith have medieval origins. During floods at the Beerse Overlaat, some village paths occasionally served as escape routes. In Lith, then, not only individual buildings but also the paths themselves are connected to the history of the place.
Walking and cycling around Lith
For a longer hike, Zuiderwaterlinie Stage 10 provides a clear basis for planning: it runs from Vlijmen to Lith, is 25.7 kilometres long and takes about five hours and 20 minutes. The route passes the Lithse Ham nature area. The distance and approximate duration can help you decide how much time to allow for this stage; route information may change.
Zuiderwaterlinie Stage 11, from Lith to Megen, offers a different perspective. It passes the Lith lock and weir complex. The oldest lock dates from 1936; the second opened in 2002 under the name Prinses Máxima. If you take the Polderwandeling Oss–Lith, you can return from Lith to Oss Centraal station by bus. Check the timetable before your hike.
The 34-kilometre Kerken en Kapelletjes Lith cycling route passes through the former municipality of Lith, along the Maasdijk and through the polders beyond it. Its stated distance gives you a clear idea of how much time to allow for the day. The two ways of getting around therefore offer different emphases: for walking Stage 10, both the distance and approximate duration are given, while for the cycling route, the distance is provided.
Museum boat de Schokker
The museum boat de Schokker in Lith is a fishing vessel more than 100 years old, now serving as a floating museum. An onboard display tells visitors about anchor-net fishing. This trade provided a livelihood for numerous families in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The boat thus offers a glimpse not only of the vessel itself, but also of a fishing tradition.
A visit can include a boat trip on the Meuse; check with the operator in advance to find out whether this is currently possible. During the sailing season, the boat can be hired exclusively for a group on any day of the week, from sunrise until two hours before sunset. Availability on your preferred date depends on reservations; contact the operator for current booking information.
Plan your stay in Lith
You can choose between the attractions based on your interests and available time: the churches, mill and chapel offer different insights into architectural history, while the walking and cycling routes provide specific options for getting out and about. The museum boat adds a look at fishing history and, subject to prior arrangement with the operator, a trip on the Meuse. The Toeristisch Informatiecentrum Lith (TIL) focuses on walking, cycling and culture.
