Exploring Geldrop-Mierlo means encountering a variety of landscapes and a rich history of craftsmanship. The Strabrechtse Heide, ancient alder carrs and places associated with textile and milling history each have their own appeal—out on the trails as well as when visiting cultural attractions.

Heathland, Forest and Walking Trails

The Strabrechtse Heide covers about 1,500 hectares and lies partly within Geldrop-Mierlo. Visitors have access to most of it; walking, cycling and horse riding are permitted as quiet forms of recreation. Check local conditions before your trip. Another natural area is Sang en Goorkens: this nature reserve in Mierlo covers about 122 hectares. Several walking trails have been opened there through cooperation between the municipality and nature and water authorities.

The Het Sang area also has its own character. The scientific forest reserve, covering about 15 hectares, includes a very old alder carr that was already in existence before 1800. In the Dal van de Kleine Dommel in Geldrop, a walk offers views over the water. The 2.5-kilometre Bosroute is a good option for a circular walk through the forest behind Geldrop; part of it is a wheelchair-accessible trail. Check current route conditions before your visit.

Cycling Routes with Different Perspectives

The routes differ in what they focus on along the way. The 20-kilometre Fietsroute Kleine IJsvogelvlinder passes waterscapes, parks, meadows and village gardens. On the Fietsrondje Geldrop-Mierlo, heathland and forests alternate; the route also passes sheep and monumental buildings. Het Mysterie van de Venus van Mierlo offers a different focus: this 25-kilometre cycling route passes several places connected with the history of the Venus. When choosing, you can therefore opt for landscape views or an archaeological trail, without combining the routes into a single circuit.

Textile History and Architecture in Geldrop

The Weverijmuseum Geldrop explores the textile history of Geldrop-Mierlo in the 19th and 20th centuries. It presents this history in a modern, audiovisual way. The museum is housed in a former woollen-fabric factory, so its historical context is also present in the building itself. The Cultuurcentrum Weeffabriek in Geldrop offers a different way to experience contemporary culture: it is a theatre, cinema and music venue, and offers creative courses. Programme details may change.

Among the notable buildings is the Heilige Brigidakerk, designed by Carl Weber and built around 1890. Its towers are 71 metres high. You can visit the church without booking in advance or arrange a guided tour. Check in advance whether services or tour arrangements could affect your visit. The history of Kasteel Geldrop dates back to its construction in 1350. Visitors can stroll through its grand corridors and see regular exhibitions. The grounds include an English landscape garden, a petting zoo, a sensory garden and the Bloemenhof; check access to individual areas before your visit.

Mills, the Venus and More Discoveries

The Standerdmolen Mierlo was built around 1640 as a bann mill, also known as a compulsory mill. It is open for visits almost every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., when a miller explains how it works. As these are specific opening hours, it is advisable to check before travelling. At the ’t Nupke mill, grain is still traditionally ground into various types of flour; visits are free. The mill is a Rijksmonument and received its name in 1979 during a major restoration.

A much older trace leads to the Venus van Mierlo, also known as the Danseresje van Geldrop: a human figure carved into stone, dating back about 13,000 years. The Kunstzaal Dommeldal in Mierlo hosts exhibitions throughout the year by professional and semi-professional artists, mostly from the region; specific dates may change. For playful discoveries, Speeltuin de Molenheide offers several play structures, a lookout point associated with the former mill, and a ten-metre-high mill outline on the Molenberg. Check access conditions in advance. At Eindhoven Zoo in Mierlo, visitors can see animals, watch feeding sessions and learn about animals at shows.
