Lage Zwaluwe is a dike village with a linear layout. Waterside paths, a swimming lake, and the history of the Liniecrossers add further, very different points of interest. When choosing accommodation, it helps to consider whether you are more interested in outdoor activities, a swimming stop, or local history. These differences are also reflected in the themes: the landscape along the Amer, the historic boundary between village areas, and a connection between liberated and occupied territory.

Paths and a waterside connection

The Beverpad is an approximately five-kilometre-long route for walking and cycling along the banks of the Amer. From the path, you can see the outlines of De Biesbosch National Park, the expansive Brabantse Polder, and the Gat van de Ham. Its approximate length gives you a practical basis for planning, while the views also shape the character of the route. You can use the Beverpad on foot or by bike. If you choose an outing for its landscape, this route offers a connection to the water and the landscape features mentioned above.

The Lange Reeweg offers a different focus. It can be walked and for centuries formed the boundary between the village areas of Hooge Zwaluwe and Lage Zwaluwe. While the Beverpad is defined by its riverside setting and views, the Lange Reeweg is defined by its historical role as a boundary. You can therefore consider the paths according to different interests: the landscape along the Amer or the history of a boundary between two village areas.

The ’t Leeuweveerke foot and bicycle ferry connects Lage Zwaluwe directly with the Jacominaplaat in Werkendam. Unlike the paths, it provides a connection to a specific destination. The ferry operates seasonally; check whether it is running during your stay before travelling. This allows you to consider the connection as a separate option when planning your trip, while keeping its seasonal operation in mind.

The history of the Liniecrossers

The Liniecrossers monument commemorates the Liniecrossers, who, after the liberation of the southern Netherlands, maintained a connection between liberated and occupied territory using rowing boats or canoes. They made an estimated 450 crossings. They transported messages and medicines, as well as Jewish people and stranded Allied pilots. This history therefore encompasses both the connection they maintained and the very different tasks associated with it. Rowing boats and canoes identify the specific means the Liniecrossers used to maintain the connection; the estimated number gives an indication of the scale of their journeys.

De Winput and walks

De Winput is a swimming lake in Lage Zwaluwe. The surrounding area includes nature where you can go for walks. This lets you distinguish between swimming and taking a walk in the surrounding natural area when planning your visit. Check local conditions before swimming. The lake adds an activity with a different focus from the paths along the Amer: here, the swimming lake and the nature around it take centre stage.
