Neerkant combines a distinctive landscape setting with natural, technological and church history. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore weigh up different priorities: its location between two peat bogs, the Neerkantse Bossen, a mountain biking route and several cultural sites.
Landscape and outdoor activities
Neerkant is situated on a high cover-sand ridge between the peat bogs of Deurnese Peel and Limburgse Peel. To the west of Neerkant, coniferous woodland known as Neerkantse Bossen was planted on a long, narrow wind-blown sand dune. These landscape features have distinct roles: the ridge places Neerkant between the peat bogs, while the dune is where the planted woodland is located. The village's setting and the woodland's origins can therefore be understood as two separate aspects of the landscape.
The De Neerkantse Bossen mountain biking route runs through Neerkantse Bossen. It alternates between straight sections and singletrack trails with many bends and changes in elevation. Both straight stretches and winding sections are part of the route, so its course is not defined by just one type of terrain. If you choose mountain biking routes based on their layout, this alternation is a specific feature to look out for.
The forest also has a play hill with natural play elements for young children. Deadwood has a different function: it provides habitat and a source of food for animals, mosses and fungi. The Neerkantse Bossen thus offers a variety of nature-related features: a play area for young children and the ecological role of dead trees. The forest can be explored not only via the mountain biking route, but also through its natural play elements and the habitats supported by deadwood.
Technology and local history
The registered museum Techniek met 'n Ziel in Neerkant has a collection of technology dating from 1900 to the present day, with a touch of nostalgia. Its time span therefore stretches from 1900 to the present; visitors interested in technology will find a focus covering a long period. Every visitor is guided by a volunteer museum guide at no extra cost. A quick look at the current visitor information will help you factor the tour into your day's plans.
Kapel Neerkant is dedicated to Our Lady of Heitrak. St. Willibrorduskerk in Neerkant was built between 1955 and 1957 to plans by architect J. Deltrap. It replaced the neo-Gothic church built in 1898, which was destroyed in 1944 during wartime hostilities. This sequence makes the building history clear: the original church was built, then destroyed, and later St. Willibrorduskerk was constructed. By contrast, the dedication is the focus at the chapel.
Neerkant's war memorial stands by Willibrorduskerk, in front of the cemetery in Neerkant. It was designed by Eindhoven artist Louis Derijks. Together with the chapel and St. Willibrorduskerk, the memorial offers another point of cultural and historical interest: the three sites can be distinguished by their dedication, architectural history and memorial design.
