Best lies in the heart of Het Groene Woud. The nature bridge over the A2 in the southern part of De Scheeken and the tree-themed Dorpswandeling Best show two different sides of the destination: landscape and nature on the one hand, the town centre and its designed surroundings on the other. Other travel themes include art, a creative clog-making workshop and historic sites.

Landscapes and Nature in Best

The southern part of De Scheeken is in Best; this is also where a nature bridge crosses the A2. The area is also known for its distinctive connection between soil and wildlife: the lime in the clay soil gives it the character of a snail paradise, home to many special species. This makes De Scheeken noteworthy for nature enthusiasts, but does not promise that any particular species will be seen.

Het Vleutse Broek lies to the east of Best. Poplars line the coulisse landscape, which is characterised by plots and sandy paths. Several ponds provide habitat for great crested newts, frogs and toads. The two areas therefore offer different highlights: in De Scheeken, the distinctive snail life is closely linked to the soil, while Het Vleutse Broek is described in terms of its varied landscape and ponds.

Walks and Creative Activities

The Dorpswandeling Best is a walking route through the town centre. Its focus is on the trees planted there, and it starts at Best railway station. The route thus combines a walk through the town with a clear theme. Those who would rather include art in a tour can walk or cycle past works of art along the “Kunst in Best” route.

Another creative activity is a workshop at Atelier Westerwind, where participants decorate and personalise their own wooden clogs. Participation details may vary. This makes the workshop different from the routes: here, creating something yourself is the focus, while the Dorpswandeling and “Kunst in Best” centre on the town and works of art, respectively.

Windmill and Recent History

Korenmolen De Volharding is a windmill dating from 1851. The Bevrijdende Vleugels Museum displays aircraft, tracked vehicles, tanks and gliders in several halls, as well as military jeeps, ZĂĽndapp motorcycles, anti-aircraft guns, cannons and ammunition. The items on display were actually used at the end of the Second World War. The museum is right next to the site where the Allies landed soldiers and equipment by glider in September 1944.

For choosing a focus, a simple comparison may help: De Scheeken links its nature themes to the lime in the clay soil; Het Vleutse Broek is characterised by poplars, plots, sandy paths and ponds. The Dorpswandeling, by contrast, is a route through the town centre that takes in the planted trees. Art, a workshop and historical themes offer further highlights, without every activity needing to be the same kind of outing.
