Oud-Urmond is the historic part of Urmond, to the left of the Julianakanaal. You can explore Urmond on a cultural visit on two scales: individual buildings with different styles and dates, and an 8.9 km walking route. When planning your trip, you can choose between the architectural history of individual sites and a route through several places.

Churches, Chapel and Architectural History

The Schippershuis opposite the Protestantse Kerk Urmond dates from 1612. The church is a whitewashed brick building dating from 1685; its organ was donated by Princes Hendrik and Frederik. Comparing the two takes you from the older house to the later church building; the organ donation adds another facet of the church’s history.

The Mariakapel offers a different architectural accent: it is octagonal, built entirely of brick and covered with a slate roof. It was built between 1751 and 1755 outside Urmond’s town walls in connection with the local veneration of Mary. At the chapel, architectural form, materials and religious significance come together. It was opened to hikers and devotees of Mary on weekends; before planning a visit, check whether this opening arrangement is still in effect.

The Terpkerk stands on a fully walled hill, with a historic cemetery around the church. The oldest part of the present-day church was built in 1792–1793 on the site of an earlier church. For almost the entire year, the Terpkerk serves as an exhibition space where artists display their work. This means you can also combine a visit to the church with a look at the changing artworks.

Windmill, Visiting Hours and Digital Tour

The Standerdmolen Merckenseick in Urmond was built during the French period on behalf of Egidius Bauduin. Visits are possible from March to October on Tuesdays from 10:00 to 14:00, as well as by appointment. If you plan to visit the windmill, check the visiting hours before setting off; arrange a visit by appointment in advance.

A 360-degree digital tour of the Protestantse Kerk Urmond is also available. It offers another way to explore the church building. Before planning, check whether the digital offering is available.

Cultural Route and Planning

The cultural route through Urmond and Berg aan de Maas is 8.9 km long. It also passes through Nattenhoven and continues through the Rivierpark Maasvallei. The walking route thus complements the individual historic buildings with a route through several places. The route may change if there is a temporary diversion; check the route before setting off.

There are different details to consider when planning: for the windmill, these are the season, day of the week and time; for the cultural route, the distance of 8.9 km. You can decide whether to plan your activities around a visiting window or a walking route.
