Roermond combines striking architecture and museums with the Maasplassen, several interconnected bodies of water created by gravel extraction that border the city. This lets you include culture and water activities in your travel plans without combining them into a single itinerary. When choosing a hotel in Roermond, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: historic sites, museum visits, a boat trip, or time on a route on foot or by bike.
Architecture and History in Roermond
The Munsterkerk was built in the early 13th century. Beneath its dome is the magnificent tomb of Count Gerard van Gelre and Margaretha van Brabant. It is considered the oldest European tomb monument depicting a married couple. The Sint-Christoffelkathedraal is a Gothic cruciform basilica dating from 1410. Since 1957, a golden statue of Saint Christopher carrying Jesus on his shoulders has stood atop its 86-metre-high tower. Locals affectionately call the figure “Sjtuf.”
From April to October, tower climbs at the cathedral are listed for the first Saturday of each month at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 pm. Before your visit, check whether these times are still current. Another surviving testament to the city’s history is the Rattentoren, one of the last remnants of Roermond’s fortifications, dating from 1300. Inside the tower, you can see a 1:25 scale model of Roermond as a medieval fortified city. During the summer months, Hart van Limburg’s city guides offer group tours of the Rattentoren by arrangement; check in advance whether they are currently running.
The Kruiswegpark also brings together several distinct elements. It was laid out in 1920 based on a design by architect Dr. Pierre Cuypers (1827–1921). The grounds include a Way of the Cross with fourteen stations, a separate processional route with eight paintings of the image of Mary, and a central square at the foot of Calvary. The numbers and separate routes give the park a different structure from the individual churches and monuments.
Museums and Guided Visits
At the Historiehuis, trade, changes of power, monasteries, art workshops and Christopher, the city’s oldest resident, are presented as interactive themes. The Cuypershuis focuses on the life and work of architect Pierre Cuypers. On Saturdays and Sundays, a 45-minute guided tour for individual visitors is offered there at 2 pm. Check the time again before your trip. The main entrance to the Cuypershuis is wheelchair accessible. If you require step-free access, check the current situation before your visit.
The ECI hydroelectric power station offers another insight into Roermond’s history: the 1920 facility has been restored, and a modern hydroelectric power plant with an output of 250 kWe has also been installed. Tours of the ECI hydroelectric power station are available for groups by arrangement. Before making plans, check whether tours are currently taking place.
Planning Visits to the Maasplassen and Routes
A boat trip on the Maasplassen lasts 70 minutes and departs from the Roerkade in Roermond city centre; before your trip, check whether the duration and departure point are still current. At Beaver Creek Wake Park on the Maasplassen, beginners and experienced sports enthusiasts alike can go wakeboarding. On foot, a varied walking route of about 12.5 kilometres connects the historic centre with the Maasplassen, a ferry crossing and the Voorstad. The “Ontdekkingstocht Roermond” cycling route is 43.4 kilometres long and passes through Roermond and the surrounding area.
For planning your schedule, the 45-minute guided tour at the Cuypershuis and the 70-minute boat trip have clear durations. The walking and cycling routes, by contrast, are described by distance: about 12.5 and 43.4 kilometres, respectively. This lets you choose between an activity with a defined duration and a route whose distance you can factor into your own plans.
