Vlodrop lies on the edge of De Meinweg National Park. Nature and local history are two distinct themes for a stay here: you can set out on foot or by bicycle towards the Koebroek woods and the adjoining border area with Germany. There is also a 12-kilometre hike, the Gitstappermolen and buildings with their own historical significance. You can shape your stay around outdoor activities, cultural history or a mix of both.

Hiking and cycling from Vlodrop

From Vlodrop, you can set out on foot or by bicycle towards the Koebroek woods and the adjoining border area with Germany. One specifically named hike is Rothenbach – Vlodrop Station; it is 12 kilometres long. On this hike, visitors experience the nature of De Meinweg National Park and Germany’s Schwalm-Nette Nature Park. These two options serve different planning purposes: the woods and border area point the way for walking and cycling trips, while the 12 kilometres give the length of a particular hike. If you are looking for a route with a stated distance, you can use this hike as a guide; if you prefer to stay flexible, you can use the direction of your trips as the starting point for planning.

The Gitstappermolen and border history

The Gitstappermolen is a watermill built in 1377 and designated a Rijksmonument, or national monument. Its location is also closely connected with the border: the Rothenbach feeds the mill and at this point also forms the border between Germany and the Netherlands. Here, the building, watercourse and border are linked by a specific geographical setting. The mill shop sells regional products from Limburg, as well as flour, baked goods, vegetables, meat, cheese and dairy products. Alongside the historic building, this offers a connection to regional food and other products.

The church, parish and MERU

The Sint Martinuskerk is another building in Vlodrop with a clear date: it was built in 1929–1930 to a design by Caspar Franssen. A much earlier historical milestone is the first recorded mention of the parish of Vlodrop-Karken-Posterholt in 1190. The dates refer to different things—the parish and the construction of the church—and provide two distinct historical reference points.

MERU (Maharishi European Research University) has been located in Vlodrop, in De Meinweg National Park, since 1990. For groups, MERU offers guided tours by appointment from Monday to Saturday. They last 1.5 hours and include refreshments. As the tour requires an appointment, you should check availability before arriving. The stated duration makes it easier to fit the visit into your day’s schedule.

Ploensjbad has a competition pool and a children’s pool. This provides another reason to visit Vlodrop, alongside hikes and historic buildings.

Plan your stay around your interests

The 12-kilometre distance is a concrete planning guide for a hike; for a MERU tour, making an appointment in advance is part of the planning. You can give the different themes as much or as little emphasis as you like, without having to fit every activity into a fixed schedule. This lets you choose your accommodation based on what you want to do in Vlodrop.
