The Groote Peel attracts more than a hundred breeding bird species; migratory birds such as the trumpeting crane also settle there. In Ospel, these natural features meet a distinctive local history. When planning your trip, it is worth treating them as separate areas of interest: walking trails lead into the landscape, while the monuments route, mill and religious architecture offer a historical perspective on the town. You can shape your trip around your interest in nature or cultural heritage.

The Peel’s landscape and birdlife

De Pelen is characterised by water, heathland, sandy ridges, birch trees and open areas covered with purple moor grass. Birdlife is also a defining feature: alongside more than a hundred breeding bird species, migratory birds such as the trumpeting crane settle there. If you are interested in nature and landscapes, you will find both distinctive habitats and varied scenery for your stay.

Buitencentrum De Pelen lies on the edge of De Groote Peel National Park. It is the national park’s visitor centre and offers an interactive introduction to the area. Three marked walking trails start there in the national park, measuring two, three and six kilometres. The different distances give you a clear basis for choosing a walk that matches your planned distance.

The Boswachterspad Mussenbaan Groote Peel is a route of its own. It crosses boardwalks, follows the border between Limburg and Brabant, and takes you along paths created during the area’s former peat extraction. There is also a meadow bird area along the route at Mussenbaan. This trail thus combines landscape, historic traces of peat extraction and a specific bird habitat, without being limited to just one of these aspects.

Activities and local history

Kabouterpad De Pelen is a 700-metre activity listed as taking 45 minutes and intended for children aged three to six. This sets it apart from the longer walking trails, for which the distance is the main detail provided. If you plan to take part, check the latest information on bookings and fees in advance.

The town centre offers a different focus: the Monumentenroute Ospel is a 5.65-kilometre walk that passes eight monuments. It draws attention to the town and its architectural and commemorative history, rather than to the national park landscape. Information about this route may be updated; checking the latest route information before setting out can help with planning.

At Aerthijsplein, the bronze Peelmonument commemorates the reclamation of the raised bog and the nature of the Peel. Ospel’s historic layout has been largely preserved. A Roman Catholic church on the connecting road is designated a Rijksmonument, or a monument protected by the state.

The Onze Lieve Vrouwe Onbevlekte Ontvangenis tells another story of the area’s architecture. This three-aisled cruciform basilica, built in the Early Gothic style, dates from 1865. It was built together with a rectory to a design by Pierre Cuypers. De Korenbloem grain mill also stands in Op de Stad, a district of Ospel. It was built in 1869 by Peter Gans of Nederweert and is dated to 1870.

When choosing a focus for your trip, you can consider nature trails, a children’s activity with a stated duration, and a walk to monuments in the town centre as distinct options. If you are looking for a hotel in Ospel, you can first decide which of these aspects you would like to shape your stay.
