Brunssum brings together nature trails in Schutterspark, cultural and memorial sites, and routes through the town centre and across the city. Streams and wetlands, preserved traces of history and an art walk offer different points of interest. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between individual paths in the park, a themed route through the town centre and a longer cycling and walking route.

Nature Trails and Finding Your Way in Schutterspark

The Roode Beek flows through Schutterspark and can be followed along narrow paths. The park connects the natural areas of Brunssummerheide and Schinveldse bossen/Tevenerheide. Another distinctive feature is its unique slope mires, which can be viewed from boardwalks. The stream, wetland landscape and links between the natural areas give the park several different landscape features.

A 3.5-kilometre discovery route runs through woodland and wetlands, alongside streams and over boardwalks. You can answer questions at the information boards. Another walking option in Schutterspark is a 1.7-kilometre wheelchair-accessible trail. Details may change, so check the latest route information before setting out.

The three entrances to Schutterspark can be reached from free car parks. The trails offer different options, from the specific discovery route to the wheelchair-accessible walking trail. Which description is most relevant to your visit depends on which route you plan to take.

Memorial Sites and Cultural History

Remains of a medieval fortification dating back to the 14th century have been preserved in Schutterspark. A plaque at the pump buildings commemorates the sheltering of Jewish children during the Second World War. The park therefore contains both older architectural remains and a memorial site connected with more recent history.

The Clemenskerkje is part of the Clemensdomein. Visitors can explore the grounds at their own pace with a 360-degree tour and an audio tour. Both tours start by scanning the QR code on the sign by the church. The Openluchttheater Brunssum was established in 1951 as part of the expansion and beautification of Vijverpark.

Routes in the Town Centre and Across Brunssum

According to a page last updated on 23 April 2024, the two-kilometre Children’s Art Route walk runs through the centre of Brunssum and includes nine stops. Each stop has child-friendly questions designed to encourage interaction.

The Parkstadroute passes through Brunssum on a different scale. It is about 34 kilometres long and designed for both cycling and walking. Comparing the Children’s Art Route with this route highlights the difference between a walk centred on the town with nine stops and a longer route suitable for both cycling and walking.

Another distinct option is the BloteVoetenPark, with a four-kilometre barefoot walk through a maze, mud puddles and obstacle courses. It operates seasonally, so check before visiting whether it is open on your chosen date. This makes it possible to choose between Brunssum’s various options by route length and type of experience, without combining them into a single route.
