The church, windmill and Kapiteinshuis give Nieuwe Pekela distinct cultural points of reference. The Evangelical Lutheran church, with its organ, points to the history of the building and the church; De Zwaluw to windmill construction; and the Kapiteinshuis to seafaring in the peat colonies. This focus is complemented by the Pekela children’s cycling route, which passes through the town. For your travel planning, the main question is whether you want to focus on cultural history or a cycling route.

Church, Organ and Cemetery

The Evangelical Lutheran church at Abraham Westersstraat A 1 is a Rijksmonument, or Dutch national monument. Its organ, with one manual and an attached pedal, was made by P. van Oeckelen in 1868. This brings two distinct aspects into focus in the same building: the church’s listed status and the specific construction history of an instrument. The manual and attached pedal indicate its configuration; the organ builder’s name and the year date its construction. The church can therefore be considered both as a national monument and through a dated instrument.

The culturally significant historic buildings in Nieuwe Pekela include the church building, the cemetery and the mortuary. The Lutheran cemetery lies on Abraham Westerstraat, on the boundary between the former Oude Pekela and Nieuwe Pekela. A church description from 2021 called it the only Lutheran cemetery in the Netherlands that was still under Lutheran administration at that time. Its location on the former boundary and this dated description give the cemetery a different focus from the organ: here, local history and administrative tradition take center stage, while the organ relates to the instrument and its year of construction.

De Zwaluw and the Kapiteinshuis

De Zwaluw is a stone gallery Dutch windmill, built in 1891 on commission from J. Graver. At the church, listed status and the organ are key points of interest; at De Zwaluw, the type of windmill, its stone construction and its date of construction come to the fore. This difference makes the two cultural subjects easy to compare: you can consider church heritage and windmill construction as different aspects of Nieuwe Pekela’s history, rather than reducing them to the same historical reference.

The Kapiteinshuis was built during an early period of prosperity in seafaring in the peat colonies. Beneath the entrance door, two hardstone plinths bearing the initials K.J.B. and J.R.K. and the year 1799 commemorate its construction. The display at the Kapiteinshuis Pekela Museum gives the impression of returning to the 19th century. This brings together the broader context of seafaring, a specific memorial at the house and the museum’s historical perspective.

Cycling Route and Local Orientation

A different approach to planning starts with the Pekela children’s cycling route, which passes through Nieuwe Pekela. If you focus on a cycling route, your trip has a different emphasis from one centered mainly on historic buildings. There is also another point of reference for finding your way around: Dierenweide Nieuwe Pekela is near Burgemeester van Boekhovenpark.

When looking for hotels for a trip to Nieuwe Pekela, it helps to identify the purpose of your stay in advance: are you especially interested in Lutheran heritage, the history of windmills and seafaring, or the cycling route?
