Winterswijk Miste combines a varied landscape with a rich local history.
Hiking Through the Landscape and Along Themed Trails
The area around Miste is ideal for hiking and cycling, as open landscapes and natural areas alternate. Meadows, hedgerows, forests and stream valleys shape this landscape. The Rondom Miste route starts at the renovated TOP De Twee Bruggen. Signs featuring blue footprints mark the way.
The Schrieverspad offers a different focus: various tree species along the hiking trail were selected by dialect writers or by people who have made a contribution to the Low Saxon language. This combines walking with a specific linguistic and cultural theme. The entrance and car park for the Schrieverspad are on Kotmansweg in Miste/Winterswijk; the trail is part of Landgoed Kotmans.
Landgoed Kotmans also has an information centre displaying shells from the Miocene that were excavated there. The two hikes have different focuses: Rondom Miste is distinguished by its starting point and blue markings, while the Schrieverspad focuses on the selected trees and their connection to the Low Saxon language. At Landgoed Kotmans, these two themes come together: the Schrieverspad's connection to language and the geological finds in the information centre.
Mills, Farms and Local History
The Meenkmolen is a grain mill dating from 1851, a wooden post mill with slate cladding and a rotating cap. It was restored in 1961. When the mill is turning, you can ask the miller for a tour.
Almost all of the approximately 80 Saxon farmsteads dating from around 1700 still stand in Miste. The Scholtenboerderij Meenk was built around 1895. The history of the site on which Huize Meenk stands dates back to the Middle Ages. Boerderij Hemmink is a remnant of a very old estate, first mentioned in 1331.
The dates refer to different things: Huize Meenk concerns the history of the site, Boerderij Hemmink the estate's recorded mention, and the Scholtenboerderij Meenk its year of construction. This distinguishes local history, the estate's documented history and the history of a specific building.
The cultural landmarks also differ in nature: the Meenkmolen is a single structure with a specified architectural form and restoration history, while the approximately 80 farmsteads represent a larger collection. The Vrijheidsboom Miste, as a wooden artwork, offers a different perspective. Daan de Leeuw created it in collaboration with the local farming community.
For a break while hiking or cycling, Het Bloemenkabinet offers coffee or tea with a tasty treat.
