Balgoij tells its local history across several layers of time: a former village church tower is a Rijksmonument, the Johannes de Doperkerk combines architectural history with figurative stained-glass windows, and underground foundation remains survive from the medieval Kasteel Balgoij. The Heerlijkheden cycling route points to an information panel about the castle; a Star Wars museum adds a very different thematic note. Historic buildings, archaeological traces and pop culture thus stand side by side.

Church, tower and architectural history

The former village church tower at Torenstraat 22 is a Rijksmonument and a simple brick structure. Its understated niche decoration adds small accents to the masonry. Notable architectural features include a later-added low upper storey, divided sound openings beneath a depressed arch, and a short four-sided spire. Niches are shallow recesses in a wall; a depressed arch is lower than a semicircle.

The Oude Sint Janstoren remained in Balgoij as a freestanding tower in 1914, after the old church was demolished and a new church was built elsewhere in Balgoij. The Johannes de Doperkerk was built in 1913–1914 to a design by architect Jan van der Valk; its figurative stained-glass windows date from 1941 and were made by Piet Clijsen. This makes it possible to distinguish the construction period from the date of the windows in the history of the church.

For a cultural and historical perspective, the tower and the church offer different points of interest: the tower’s architectural features take centre stage, while the Johannes de Doperkerk highlights the time gap between the design and the stained-glass windows.

Huis te Balgoij and its traces

Huis te Balgoij was a castle dating from the mid-14th century. The complex included an outer bailey and an inner castle, both surrounded by a moat. These terms refer to two parts of a castle complex, not to two separate castles. The site of the former Kasteel Balgoij lies at the end of Torenstraat, behind a farm. Underground foundation remains of the medieval castle survive there. After the 1941 excavation, the remains were covered with earth and planted over. The castle’s former layout and its archaeological remains thus offer two different perspectives: the layout describes the complex, while the foundations are its surviving traces.

Along the Heerlijkheden cycling route

The Heerlijkheden cycling route points to an information panel about Kasteel Balgoij. It continues along Drutenseweg and Torenstraat to a path leading to the Oude Toren. The route description thus mentions both a historical theme and a specific sequence of streets and a path. For cyclists, the castle connection and the route as described can be considered different aspects of the route.

A different cultural theme

The Padawan Museum Balgoy is a Star Wars museum in the attic of the Theetuin en Koffiehuis Balgoy “De Holtsehoek”. The thematic focus thus shifts from church architecture and medieval local history to pop culture.
