The Rondje Randwijk is a 4.7-kilometre walking trail. The Randwijkse Buitenpolder offers a wider range of activities: you can walk, swim, fish and go boating there. When choosing what to do for the day, the difference is clear: there is a named walking route as well as several water-based and leisure activities.

Walking, Water and Birdwatching

Facilities at the Randwijkse Buitenpolder include a beach, walking trails and a marina for visiting boats. There is also a fishing platform, a steel birdwatching station and a picnic area. The facilities cater to different interests: alongside trails and water activities, there are opportunities for birdwatching and picnicking.

If birdwatching is important to you, the Veerweg and the Randwijkse Rijndijk offer good opportunities to observe meadow birds and overwintering migratory birds in the floodplain with a pair of binoculars. The season is another interesting aspect: the area is home to meadow birds as well as overwintering migratory birds.

Floodplain and Landscape along the Nederrijn

The area around Randwijk and Heteren along the Nederrijn is characterised by orchards, tree nurseries and brickworks. There are also views of ridges formed during the penultimate ice age. This description of the landscape goes beyond individual leisure activities and brings together different impressions of the surrounding area: cultivation and tree nurseries, brickworks and the striking ridges.

One specific landscape feature is the old river course dating from Roman times. In the floodplain next to Randwijk, it is visible as the Laaksloot, a ditch lined with pollarded willows. The Romans and Batavians used the remnant of the river course as a natural harbour. The ditch thus reflects both the floodplain’s present-day character and its historical use.

Church and Castle in Historic Randwijk

The Hervormde Kerk in Randwijk is a national heritage monument (Rijksmonument) and is mentioned in documents dating from 1395. It is a single-nave village church with a late Gothic choir closed on three sides. The description of its architectural form draws attention to specific features: the single main nave and the distinctive end of the choir. The 1395 reference is part of the church’s documented history.

De Nijburg, also known as Nyenborch, was a 14th-century castle in Randwijk/Heteren. At the site where it once stood, an additional 0.4-kilometre walk is recommended. The partly paved footpath runs below the castle moat and above the rampart. This connects the former castle site with a short walk whose route follows the moat and rampart.

Brickmaking History near Heteren

The Gelders Smalspoor Museum is near Randwijk, at Steenbakkerij Randwijk in Heteren. Guided tours there cover the history of the Dutch brick industry. Visitors can also take rides on a narrow-gauge railway along a reconstructed track through a nature-rich floodplain area where clay was once extracted. The tour and train ride offer different perspectives: one presents the history of the brick industry, while the other travels through an area bearing traces of earlier clay extraction.
