Didam can be viewed from several perspectives: the war memorial on Lieve Vrouweplein anchors a place of remembrance in the town, while the Nevelhorstpad is shaped by several water features. St. Martinus Mill adds a perspective on architectural history dating from 1855. The Cool Nature Park Het Eiland and the regional Bergherbos bring in natural areas of very different sizes. This allows you to place remembrance, architectural history and landscape in context through clearly identified locations and features.

Remembrance on Lieve Vrouweplein

The war memorial has stood permanently on Lieve Vrouweplein since 1970. A gold-colored dove of peace rises from a white natural-stone column. The memorial plaques are engraved with the names of 44 Didam war victims who died between 1940 and 1949; they included civilians and military personnel. The motif and inscriptions thus represent two sides of the same place: a symbol of peace and the named remembrance of people with different roles. The dates refer to different contexts: 1970 is the year the memorial began standing there permanently, while 1940 to 1949 denotes the period in which the victims named died.

St. Martinus Mill

St. Martinus Mill in Didam was built in 1855. In terms of chronology, its history goes back further than the permanent installation of the war memorial. Regular visiting hours are listed as Saturdays from 09:30 to 15:30; exceptional circumstances may result in exceptions. Before you travel, check whether a visit is possible on your chosen date.

Walking routes and waterways

The “Rondje Didam, Nieuw-dijk & Loil” walking route is listed as 17.4 km long for the 2024–2025 route period. This distance offers a specific measure when choosing a walk based on its length.

The Nevelhorstpad starts at De Nevelhorst, Nevelhorstpad 2, in Didam. Along the route are a man-made nature pond and a stream whose course was restored in 2003. The path also runs alongside the Nevelhorst body of water. The starting point, pond, stream and body of water are therefore specific reference points for this route. The two routes can be compared using different criteria: the walking route by its stated length, and the Nevelhorstpad by its starting point and water features.

Nature on different scales

Cool Nature Park Het Eiland lies on the southwestern side of Didam and covers about two hectares. The Bergherbos covers more than 1,800 hectares and lies on a high push moraine surrounded by flat lowlands. It stretches between ’s-Heerenberg, Doetinchem and Didam. The size figures show the difference between a named park and a large natural area. For the Bergherbos, the described terrain adds a specific landscape profile to the area figure: an elevated moraine surrounded by flat lowlands. The nature-related attractions thus range from a park on Didam’s southwestern side to a regional landscape between three towns.
