Malden offers a range of options for outings during your stay: a garden path almost one kilometre long that is accessible to wheelchairs, walkers and pushchairs; hikes of 4.5 and 7.5 kilometres; and a mountain bike route through the forests of Heumensoord. HARM's Hoeve adds a farm experience to the selection. When planning, the main things to consider are route length, mode of transport and theme: garden, landscape, Roman road or memorial site.

Garden path and landscapes on foot

The Familiepad Heemtuin is a short route, almost one kilometre long. It is accessible to wheelchairs, walkers and pushchairs. Along the way, you can discover features of the Heemtuin Malden such as a pond, a flower-rich meadow, a bee house, heathland and a herb garden. The focus here is therefore not just on the route length: the five named features give the walk a garden theme that sets it apart from a hike through open countryside or a trip to a memorial site. If you would like to combine a walk with a varied garden landscape, the Familiepad offers a specific way to do so.

The 4.5-kilometre Kuierroute leads through the Lierdal on the edge of Malden and neighbouring Molenhoek. The Lierdal is open and hilly, with traditional cultural landscapes, wooded areas and heathland. The route also passes several orchards, including historic ones. This hike thus combines a clearly defined distance with a landscape where open spaces, wooded areas and heathland sit alongside historic orchards. The length is also useful when comparing routes: the Kuierroute is three kilometres shorter than the 7.5-kilometre Kop van Malden.

Hiking between places and through history

The Kop van Malden runs for 7.5 kilometres between Malden and Nijmegen and passes the memorial site for Airstrip B91. It is therefore three kilometres longer than the Kuierroute and is also described as connecting two places. The memorial site gives the route a specific historical connection: if you would like to include a memorial site in your hike, this route passes one.

The Kuierroute also has a historical connection: it follows the course of an old Roman road along the border between Gelderland and Limburg; this road has been here since the 12th century. The Ommetje Bos en Kuil also follows an ancient Roman road. The Kuierroute additionally runs along the provincial border, while both hikes have a connection to Roman roads.

Mountain bike route and farm experience

If you prefer mountain biking to walking, the Malden mountain bike route takes you through the forests of Heumensoord. This gives you a different way to get around than on the Familiepad or either of the two hiking routes. The forest landscape is the specific theme here; the routes in the Lierdal and the Heemtuin offer distinct alternatives, with different landscape and garden features.

HARM's Hoeve is a farm experience on Westerkanaaldijk in Malden, on the edge of Nijmegen. Blonde d'Aquitaine cattle, goats, pigs and sheep are kept together in one barn. This outing is therefore centred on the farm and the different animal species being kept together, rather than on route length or landscape. If you would like to organise your outings by theme, the farm adds an agricultural focus to the hiking and cycling routes.
