Oene offers a clear contrast between experiencing the landscape and exploring local history. The Klompenmakerspad is a hiking route through the agricultural surroundings, while the mill, church and war memorials offer cultural and historical highlights. When looking for a hotel in Oene, this distinction may help you decide whether to plan your stay around hiking or around architectural and memorial history.

Hiking in the Oener Broek

The Klompenmakerspad is a hiking trail through the agricultural surroundings. The route offers sweeping views across the Oener Broek and follows old sandy tracks; it also runs along the Stroombreed through the Oenerbroek. These provide different points of reference for planning your trip: the views and sandy tracks describe the landscape, while the Stroombreed identifies a specific feature along the route. You can decide whether the open surroundings or the route itself is your main interest.

Korenmolen Werklust: Design and Visiting

Korenmolen Werklust in Oene is an octagonal wooden gallery Dutch windmill with a thatched roof. It was built in 1858 and has a wingspan of 23 metres. The mill is open on Saturdays from 10:00 to 13:00; on other days, it is open when the sails are turning. Check the opening hours before your visit, as arrangements may change. In its shop, the mill sells its own freshly milled pancake flour and other types of flour. The site brings together architectural history and a specific range of goods for sale.

Hervormde Kerk Oene

Hervormde Kerk Oene is a Romanesque village church, originally built with a single-aisled nave and a simple tuff-stone tower. The church contains wall and vault paintings, some of which were uncovered during the restoration from 1959 to 1962. The design reflects its Romanesque origins, while the paintings that were partly uncovered also offer insight into the building’s restoration history.

Two War Memorials and Their History

The war memorial in Oene commemorates fifteen residents who died in the bombing on 22 March 1945. Another war memorial is located in Oene at Bartjesbrug. It commemorates the crew members of a British Lancaster Mk I that crashed on 22 June 1944 in the Oenerbroek, near Bartjesbrug, over the Stroombreed. The memorial is a natural-stone erratic boulder with a brass commemorative plaque; a bench stands beside it. The two sites commemorate different events and people: residents who died in the bombing and the aircraft’s crew members.

Local History at the Museum

The Cultuur Historisch Museum Oene has permanent exhibitions about Oene during wartime. These include the aircraft crash in June 1944 and the bombing in March 1945, which are also commemorated by the war memorials. The museum also covers the Zuivelfabriek “De Hoop” and the subject of hygiene. The topics in the local history exhibits therefore extend beyond the two wartime commemorations.
