In Culemborg, remarkable evidence of the town’s history meets trails through a river landscape. The Binnenpoort, the Elisabeth Weeshuis Museum and historic sites such as Werk aan het Spoel offer different insights into the town and its surroundings. There are also walking trails with designated route lengths, a mill with its own workshop and tours focusing on historical themes. During your stay, you can decide whether architecture, museums and guided tours or outdoor trails should take priority.

Architecture and Local History

The Binnenpoort is a brick gate tower dating from the 14th century and a Rijksmonument, a Dutch national monument. The tower is currently used as the artist Rop Philippi’s studio; check before visiting whether access is possible. The Oude Stadhuis is another distinctive architectural landmark: it was built in 1534 in the Brabant Gothic style.

The Culemborgse Weeshuis is the oldest orphanage in the Netherlands built specifically for orphaned children. More than 700 orphans grew up there between 1560 and 1952. Its long history of use and buildings from different centuries offer various perspectives on Culemborg’s past.

Museum and Milling Craft

The Elisabeth Weeshuis Museum is Culemborg’s town museum. Its nine museum rooms take you through a monumental building and offer a journey through time. The museum is a 15- to 20-minute walk from Culemborg station. Refreshments include coffee, tea, local specialities and light lunches.

The Johannamolen, built in 1878, offers another glimpse of local heritage. It mills flour from organic wheat, spelt and emmer wheat, grown locally wherever possible. In the half-day workshop “Be a Miller for a Day,” participants take on the miller’s tasks themselves. You can learn about the mill both through its year of construction and through the craft practised there today.

Forts, River Landscapes and Walking Trails

Werk aan het Spoel is one of the forts of the Hollandse Waterlinies, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. The site lies in a river landscape, three kilometres from Culemborg’s centre via the Lekdijk. From Culemborg, you can reach Werk aan het Spoel on foot or by bike via the Goilberdingerdijk. There, you can join guided tours along the trenches and through the floodplains, for example featuring nature stories or the history of the waterline.

The trails vary considerably in length and format. The Goilberdingerpad is a 15-kilometre Klompenpad walking trail on the western outskirts of Culemborg. It starts at Werk aan het Spoel and passes meadows, dikes, Fort Everdingen and the Lek floodplains. The Jan Blankenpad is 3.5 kilometres long and designed as an interactive discovery trail: it runs through the floodplains from Werk aan het Spoel to Fort Everdingen and back. Check route conditions before setting out.

Another historically shaped landscape is the Ronde Haven, located on the site of a former harbour in Culemborg. It includes a body of water with an old river branch known as the “Kleine Lek,” several meadows and a willow wood. The grounds have significant archaeological value because they are on the former castle site of the Kasteeltuin Culemborg. An exhibition of archaeological finds from the area is held there every year in the Groene Schuur.

Guided Tours and Other Ways to Visit

Stichting Stadsgidsen Culemborg offers a historical walking tour with a guide, lasting around 1.5 hours. An accessible tour of the historic centre includes several rest stops and wheelchair-accessible toilets. Another tour focuses on the Stolpersteine and the places where Culemborg’s Jewish residents lived and worked.

Werk aan het Spoel’s programme also offers a variety of reasons to visit, including excursions and guided tours, an annual nature day, a Fortenfair, and dance and theatre performances. Check the current events calendar for dates. A ferry serving all types of traffic runs year-round between Culemborg and Schalkwijk. In Culemborg, it departs from the marina at Veerkade; it is advisable to check the current ferry status before travelling.
