The cultural attractions range from a medieval castle to an archaeological site; the Doddendaelpad passes through several types of landscape. You can plan your visit around what matters most to you: historic architecture, time on a trail, or the beaches and play equipment at Groene Heuvels.
Cultural history in buildings and archaeological sites
Slot Doddendael is a medieval castle surrounded by a moat. The rectory at Julianastraat 7 offers a different historical perspective: it was built in 1839 and has an Empire-style entrance surround. The two buildings therefore showcase different architectural forms and periods.
The rectory estate also includes a barn with a curved gable, a dovecote and decorative finials. The barn thus adds different architectural details from the rectory’s entrance surround. Anyone interested in historic architectural styles will find specific details here on both the main building and its outbuilding.
At the site of the Roman villa of Ewijk, there is a 17-metre-long masonry drainage channel. Part of it was moved to the reception area of Beuningen town hall. The archaeological site and the relocated section of the structure offer two different ways to explore the Roman past.
Weurtsch Straatje is an 11th-century dike. Later, workers used it to get to a brickworks. This sequence connects the dike’s historical origins with its later use as a route to work.
Walking landscapes and recreation
The Doddendaelpad passes through floodplains, along a Waal River beach, through farmland and orchards, through woodland and over a dike. The route therefore covers several different types of landscape. If you enjoy experiencing a variety of surroundings on a walk, you can make this trail a distinct focus of your trip.
Large groups of Red Geuzen cattle and Konik horses live in the floodplains, adding a nature-focused element to the landscape. The Groene Heuvels recreation area has extensive beaches and play equipment for young children. The walking route and recreation area therefore cater to different interests when planning your trip, without needing to be combined into a single outing.
Getting around and events
At the TIP Ewijk Tourist Information Point, there is an information board with a map; route maps for walkers and cyclists are also sold there. The Doddendaelpad is accessible by public transport via the Keizershoeve bus stop in Ewijk. Check the stop information again before travelling.
In the municipality of Beuningen, Stichting Wandelen in Beuningen organises a walk twice a year: Beleef Beuningen Buiten takes place in spring and Actief Ontmoeten in autumn. If either walk fits your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance, as they may change.
