A walk through Barneveld is just under 3.5 kilometres long and starts at the Oranjerie on the De Schaffelaar estate. The choice of walks ranges from this short route to longer trails through meadows, heathland and forest. Museums, historic buildings and waterside activities also offer different ways to shape your trip.
Choose hiking trails by distance and landscape
Among the listed hikes, the route through Barneveld is the shortest at just under 3.5 kilometres. The Klompenpad Het Paradijspad is ten kilometres long and leads through the outskirts of Barneveld, across meadows and estates, and alongside streams, heathland and forest. There are good opportunities to spot different bird species and deer along this route, although sightings are not guaranteed. Another hiking route covers 26 kilometres through and around Barneveld. The distances provide a concrete comparison without specifying a walking time. For the walk starting at the Oranjerie, check the route on site.
Cycling routes also vary considerably in length: the 20-kilometre Doortraproute Barneveld follows wide paths, quiet roads and clear, easy-to-navigate junctions. A 75-kilometre connecting cycling route passes through the village centres of Barneveld. You can compare the listed distances to choose a shorter or longer ride before selecting a route. The fully restored Puurveense Molen in Kootwijkerbroek is also recommended as a stop for visitors exploring the area by bike.
Heathland, forests and wildlife
Kootwijk lies between extensive heathland and the largest active drifting sand areas in Western Europe. The monumental Sfinx transmission building of Radio Kootwijk is considered a defining landmark of Kootwijk. Guided tours of Radio Kootwijk focus on its architecture, technology, history and the former life of the village; tour dates and availability vary. The Kootwijkerzand is accessible year-round between sunrise and sunset. As access rules may change for nature conservation or safety reasons, check them before your visit.
The estates and nature areas described here offer further landscapes to explore: the Klein Bylaer, Kallenbroek and Groot Otelaar estate complex lies west of Barneveld in a wetland landscape crossed by streams, and can be explored on foot or by bike. ’t Sol includes mixed woodland, a park-like area, a former arboretum, heathland and a former sand pit; ravens breed there. A manor house, hedgerows, heathland, ponds and small bog pools define the Wilbrinkbos. The rare great crested newt occurs in the lake. Around Garderen, Wilde Kamp and Bergsham offer opportunities for walking and cycling; the area is also home to ancient burial mounds, former enclosed plots, red deer and wild boar.
Museums and historic buildings
In the centre of Barneveld, opposite the church, Museum Nairac has been housed in a former 17th-century brewery since 1975. The Nederlands Pluimveemuseum has nearly 3,500 square metres of exhibition space and offers visitors the experience of an original poultry auction. In Terschuur, the Oude Ambachten & Speelgoed Museum presents 160 crafts, shops and fully furnished workshops. The collection mainly tells the story of Dutch history from around 1910 to 1970. Several traditional crafts are demonstrated live there each week; the demonstrations on offer may vary. An open-air area featuring historic agricultural machinery complements the exhibition.
The present-day house on the De Schaffelaar estate dates from 1852. The main building is notable for its design in the English Neo-Gothic style, which is almost unique in the Netherlands. The Oranjerie on the estate is also the starting point for the walk through Barneveld, which is just under 3.5 kilometres long. Another trace of the past leads to Garderen: prehistoric burial mounds lie along the Pad van Zus walking trail. The Den Olden Florus mill has stood in its present form since 1584; the associated mill shop is open to visitors on Saturdays. Check opening hours before setting out.
Zeumeren and waterside activities
In Voorthuizen, Zeumeren Watersport offers water skiing, wakeboarding and stand-up paddleboarding. Recreatiegebied Zeumeren is an official bathing site with long beaches and places to relax in the water. SchatEiland Zeumeren is an indoor adventure park covering more than 5,500 square metres. The three attractions offer different experiences: water sports, waterside relaxation and an indoor adventure park.
