The ferry docks directly in Oost-Vlieland, the island’s only village. This gives you a clear starting point for finding your bearings during your stay: in the old village, you’ll encounter authentic gabled façades, and the village lies below Vuurboetsduin. At the same time, the dunes and the Wadden Sea are directly accessible from Oost-Vlieland. The village thus combines a focus on history with access to a variety of landscapes.
Arriving and getting around the island
Visitors are not allowed to bring cars to Vlieland. A bus is ready when the ferry arrives, and bicycles can also be rented. Exact bus arrangements and the availability of rental bikes may change. So check these practical details before you travel if you want to plan your journeys. To find your way around, it’s worth treating visits to the village and excursions to the island’s other landscapes as distinct parts of your stay, rather than assuming that the same mode of transport suits every activity.
Village centre, architectural history and walks
Oost-Vlieland’s village centre has been designated a protected village landscape since 1971. A key cultural and historical attraction is Museum Tromp’s Huys, which explores Vlieland’s cultural, historical and maritime past and is housed in the island’s oldest building. The building was constructed shortly after 1575. The Nicolaaskerk also offers insight into the village’s history. Dating from 1605, it is one of the oldest originally Protestant church buildings in the Netherlands.
For an independent exploration, a cultural and historical walk takes you through the old part of Oost-Vlieland. There is also the “Jan Houter” village walk, which passes houses, monuments and places of interest. These offer two different ways to focus on the historic village centre: an independent walk through the old part of the village and a named tour with stops along its route. It’s a good idea to check the latest details in advance for dates of the Jan Houter walk.
Views, dunes and cycle paths
The lighthouse stands atop the 40-metre-high Vuurboetsduin. From there, you can see across the village, the North Sea and the Wadden Sea. Check visiting hours if you plan to include the lighthouse in your itinerary. Even without this viewpoint, the dunes and the Wadden Sea offer different focal points for a stay; both natural areas are directly accessible from Oost-Vlieland.
If you’d like to explore the surroundings by bicycle, there’s another clear distinction between the landscapes: cycle paths run through the forest around Oost-Vlieland, while most cycle paths outside the forest pass through the dunes. This makes it easy to distinguish between forest and dune landscapes when planning, without combining the two types of cycle path into a single route.
Nature experiences and excursions beyond the village centre
De Lepelaar is Vlieland’s nature education centre and serves as a starting point for excursions, exhibitions and creative activities. At De Lepelaar, you can learn about the nature of the Wadden area, listen to the sounds of the Vlieland night or compose a piece of music using birdsong. A guided mudflat excursion lasts an hour and a half, is suitable for adults and children aged eight and over, and starts at the nature education centre. Wellington boots are available free of charge. Dates and booking conditions may change, so check the latest details if you plan to join this excursion.
The excursion to Nieuwe Kooi offers a different nature experience. It takes you to a freshwater area in mixed woodland outside the village centre. Plants, insects and animals can be found there all year round. Unlike the mudflat excursion, this one focuses on a woodland and freshwater area rather than the Wadden area.
The route of the Wn 12H Bunker Museum also lies outside the village centre. It leads through trenches and bunkers, past viewpoints and gun emplacements. Wn 12H is the only one of the positions built on Vlieland that has survived. Together with the protected village centre, this offers a different way to explore the island’s history: one through historic buildings and the village landscape, the other through military installations and their surroundings.
