Waskemeer can be explored from several perspectives: along walking routes through heathland, pastures and the village, through local history, or by attending recurring events. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether nature, remembrance, archaeological traces or a festival date should be the deciding factor for your trip. These themes can help you tailor your trip to your own interests.

Walking routes between heathland, pastures and the village

The Duurswouderheide is considered the largest heathland area in the province of Friesland and covers 150 hectares. The Swalkroute Waskemeer is a walking route through pastures, the Duurswouderheide and the village of Waskemeer. Shortly before leaving the heathland, it runs alongside the Waskemar. Stage 14 of the Groot-Frieslandpad covers 24.2 kilometres from Beetsterzwaag to Waskemeer. The two routes can be distinguished by different features: the Swalkroute focuses on landscape types, while the stage is defined by its named endpoints and distance. You can take the stage length into account when planning your walk.

A description from 2021 names the Bauernlandweg Waskemeer as a path across the Janssen-Stichting estates, connecting Haulerwijk with Wijnjewoude. If you plan to take this path, check current trail conditions in advance.

Remembrance, the village name and early history

The Simon van Hasselt memorial in Waskemeer is a marble plaque bearing an inscription. It commemorates the deportation of the Jewish Van Hasselt family. The Waskmar pond gave Waskemeer its name; the present-day village name derives from Waskmar. Waskemeer was previously called Haulerwijk-Beneden and became an independent village in 1954.

The Waskemeer – Haule II archaeological site shows traces of settlement from the Mesolithic period. Compared with the memorial, it represents a different historical layer: early settlement rather than remembrance of the deportation. If you would like to include local history in your stay, you can explore remembrance, the origin of the name, the village’s status and its archaeological past as distinct topics.

Events and travel dates

The Poptimaal Festival takes place annually in Waskemeer. A report from 2025 describes how the music festival has developed into an event featuring music, sports and games. Poptimaal is for all ages and also includes a run for both age groups. De Beer van Waskemeer is held on the last Saturday of the school holidays. If you are travelling for an event, check the specific date in advance before planning your stay around it.

For a walking holiday, the described landscape types or the stage with its specified distance can help you choose a focus; for a festival, the specific date should determine your travel dates. First decide which of these themes matters most to you, then plan your stay accordingly.
