Wirdum can be understood through its still clearly recognizable terp form and the layout of its historic village center. The settlement originated in the early Middle Ages as a terp village; at the same time, the Route Dorpen Zuid walking route passes through Swichum, Wirdum and Wytgaard. This gives the place two clearly distinct perspectives: the development of a village on a terp and a route through three villages.
Terp and village center
The terp is still clearly recognizable in Wirdum, although parts of it have been removed. The historic village center developed around the church terp and along the west side, following the parallel streets Greate Buorren and Lytse Buorren. The settlement pattern can therefore be traced through specific features: the terp, the church as a focal point, and the two streets. The Sint Martinuskerk, dedicated to Saint Martin, and the Oenema-Cammingakapel date from the 13th century. Their dates place both buildings in the same historical period and make Wirdum’s sacred architectural history tangible at two named sites.
Buildings with different histories
Other buildings also reflect different historical functions. The former dairy at Kamp 1–3 comprises several factory halls with ornamental gable crowns; it also includes a director’s house dating from 1891. The former vicarage with coach house at Hôf 1 stands on a spacious plot opposite the church’s south façade. At Legedyk 68, a building stands on the connecting road between the village center and the old Bredyk. Taken together, these details range from industrial architecture to the former vicarage and a location linking the village center with the old Bredyk.
A walk and time with the animals
For walkers, Route Dorpen Zuid provides a clear geographical framework: it passes through Swichum, Wirdum and Wytgaard; one full-route option is 13.6 km long. The distance refers to the full-route option, while the sequence of villages shows that the walk extends beyond Wirdum’s village center.
An animal pasture was established in Wirdum in 2021. Young and old alike enjoy going there to spend time with the animals. This offers a different focus for an outing alongside the walking route: here, it is about spending time with the animals; there, it is about a route through several villages.
A meal after a tour
The small family-run business Hotel Eetcafé Duhoux has been based in Wirdum since 1916. After a walk or bike ride, visitors can have coffee or lunch there; dinner is also available. These options suit different parts of the day: coffee or lunch after the tour, as well as dinner as another meal.
Former routes to Wirdum
The history of access adds to the picture of the terp and village center. In the past, Wirdum was reached mainly via the Tjaardervaart, the Nieuwe Vaart and the Wirdumervaart; it was not until the mid-19th century that its land connections were improved. This historical development differs from today’s Route Dorpen Zuid walking option. Together, the terp, the village layout that developed over time, and changes to land access reveal different time layers in the history of the place.
