The Kloosterkapel brings together a concert programme and architectural and historical details; nearby, hiking and cycling routes offer a range of lengths and themes. You can tailor your trip to culture, outdoor activities or a mix of both.

Building History and Concerts

The Tsjerke fan Sibrandahûs originally belonged to Klaarkamp Abbey. Its window surrounds are richly decorated, and the tracery of one window is well preserved. The crypt of the Tjaarda van Starkenborch family is located in the choir of the Kloosterkapel Sibrandahûs. Next to the pulpit is a cabinet organ by Van Vulpen, dating from 1957. The window features, family history and instrument offer different historical points of interest in the church.

A concert is held in the Kloosterkapel once a month on Sunday afternoons. The programme ranges from classical music to rock. One-day exhibitions may also be held during concerts. The concerts therefore provide a regular cultural highlight; exhibitions are an additional option, not a fixed part of every event.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Route

The “Goddeloze Singel - Sijbrandahuis” hiking route is 10.3 kilometres long and forms part of a centuries-old Kloosterpad dating from 1453. The “Sibrandahûs – Claercamp – Burdaard – Rinsumageast” route is 16.5 kilometres long and starts at Sibrandahûs’s monastery church, built around 1300. The routes thus differ both in length and in the historical landmarks mentioned.

The Kloosterkapel is on a loop of the Klooster Claercamppad and a loop of the Bonifatius Kloosterpad; the Bonifatius Kloosterpad also passes close to the chapel. On the return leg of the “Rondjes om de kerken” route, the walk follows a cycle path along the Klaarkampster Mar. These details provide different points of reference when choosing a route, without combining the paths into a single tour.

“Rondje culinair Dokkum” offers a different kind of route: this 55-kilometre culinary cycling route crosses the fertile Wadden soils north of Dokkum, passes through ancient villages and extends as far as Sybrandahûs. While the hiking trails take monastery history and churches as their points of reference, this cycling route combines its culinary focus with a description of the landscape.

Klaarkamp and Overnight Stays

The former Klaarkamp Abbey stood west of Dokkum in the late Middle Ages, between present-day Rinsumageast and Sibrandahûs. The fact that the Tsjerke fan Sibrandahûs originally belonged to the abbey provides another link to it. Several objects commemorating Claercamp Abbey are on display at Museum Dokkum. The abbey’s history can therefore be explored through both the church and the museum objects.

Pilgrims can stay overnight in simple accommodation at the Kloosterkapel. Check in advance how this option is arranged for your dates.
