Until 1939, Urk was an island in the Zuiderzee; today, it is a picturesque fishing village in Flevoland. You can discover its history at a range of sites: the Vuurtoren lighthouse, Museum Urk, the Vissersmonument and along the “Rondje Eiland Urk” route. There are also guided walks through the old village centre and opportunities to enjoy nature in Urkerbos and Urkerveld. The area’s cultural history, walking routes and landscape offer a variety of ways to shape your stay in Urk.

History and Places of Remembrance

The documented history of Urk dates back to 966. The Vuurtoren was built in 1844. On clear days, it offers views across three provinces—a visit combines a precisely dated landmark with views whose exceptional range depends on clear weather.

Museum Urk offers a VR experience featuring a virtual dive to the bottom of the Zuiderzee and a 3D view of a shipwreck. Alongside the history of the village, visitors can explore a digitally presented view of the Zuiderzee. The Vissersmonument commemorates the many people from Urk who died at sea. The names of 368 people are engraved on 34 marble plaques, making the monument’s connection to those remembered clear.

Exploring on Foot or by Bike

You can explore the “Rondje Eiland Urk” on foot or by bike. The route focuses on the vanished boundary between land and water and follows the renewed pile screen. Where it is missing, special paving slabs mark the route. The trail is suitable for cyclists and pedestrians and is easily accessible year-round.

Ten signs along the route tell stories about events around the former island boundaries. The trail is therefore more than just a route; it also offers historical themes to discover. If you’re looking for a guided walk through the old village centre, the “Ginkiestocht” offers another option, leading through a maze of narrow lanes. Check the dates for this guided walk before your trip.

Woodland, Landscape and Nature

Urkerbos is characterised by a mix of species-rich deciduous woodland, coniferous forest and natural clearings. A mountain bike route recently established there is 8.4 kilometres long. Its details may change if the route is extended.

Speelbos Urk offers another way to enjoy nature. It covers more than two hectares of woodland and includes a stream and several play structures made from natural materials. Urkerveld was designed with consideration for cultural history, education and experiences of nature. It is an attractive area for unusual birds, butterflies and dragonflies. The Urkerveld cycling route connects the woodland with the IJsselmeer and the dike.

The routes and areas mentioned offer different ways to get to know Urk and its landscape: the “Rondje Eiland Urk” combines exercise with information about the former island boundary, while Urkerbos and Urkerveld put woodland and nature centre stage. Depending on your interests, you can make cultural history, a bike ride or nature experiences the focus of your stay.

Fish at the Harbour

The harbour also offers a distinct culinary highlight. Visitors can enjoy smoked IJsselmeer eel or another fresh fish in Urk’s welcoming harbour. A meal of fish can thus complement your exploration of Urk’s history and landscape.
