Diever lies on the edge of Drents-Friese Wold National Park; forests, heathland and shifting sands are directly accessible from the town. The open-air theatre also gives the town a cultural focus: since 1946, it has brought Shakespeare to the stage in a woodland setting. The OERmuseum takes visitors back to another time, from the last Ice Age to the Bronze and Iron Ages. When planning your trip, you can give different weight to nature, theatre and prehistory as reasons for your visit.

Shakespeare and Prehistory

The Shakespeare Theatre Diever includes a replica of London's Globe Theatre. Guided backstage tours include the area beneath the stage, the costume and set workshop, and the Globe Theatre. The tour thus offers a look at various parts of the theatre. Tour dates may vary by season; check them in advance.

The OERmuseum Diever presents prehistory from the last Ice Age to the Bronze and Iron Ages. Archaeological finds and dioramas in the Schultehuus bring the different periods to life as subjects of the exhibition. The museum also organises cycling and walking tours past megalithic tombs, burial mounds and prehistoric farmsteads. Workshops and lectures round out the programme, which may vary by season.

Hiking and Cycling

Hiking, cycling, mountain biking and horseback riding are all possible in the area around Diever. One specific hiking option is the Hunebed Route in Drents-Friese Wold: it passes a hunebed and a surviving esch. An esch is old arable land; along the way, hikers encounter both a hunebed and this historic landscape feature.

For a cycling trip, the 46-kilometre Drents-Friese Woud Route has a clear starting point: it begins at the Tourist Information Office in Diever. Check route conditions and signage before setting off. Another themed cycling route passes through Diever and combines cycling with forested areas, monuments and hiding places associated with the Second World War. The province described this route in November 2025; before your trip, also check the signage and digital access.

The “Sporen zoeken met de vader van de Hunebedden” hiking route begins and ends at the OERmuseum. When hikers reach a point of interest, the app’s audio commentary starts automatically. App content and route conditions may change; check them before your hike. The tours therefore differ not only in their mode of travel: one leads to a hunebed and a surviving esch, while another adds audio at points of interest.

Plan Your Journey

Bus services also stop at bus stops in Diever: route 20 goes to Steenwijk, and route 28 to Meppel and Assen. As timetables may change, check them before travelling. Together with the different cultural and nature-based attractions, the specific routes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay in Diever.
