A trailhead sign and a vibrant arts and crafts scene give Windward Side its own character. If you walk uphill toward Mt. Scenery, you will find the sign on the left side of the trailhead. In town, cultural points of interest meet information about hiking; on Saba, a variety of trails add to the island’s appeal.
Getting oriented around the trail
The Saba Conservation Foundation’s Trail Shop is near the entrance to the Mt. Scenery hiking trail and provides information about guided hikes. If you are interested, confirm the current arrangements before your visit. The Saba Tourist Bureau is in the heart of Windward Side, directly across from Breadline Plaza. There, you can get information about activities, events, and travel on Saba; confirm the current offerings before your visit.
Art, local history, and crafts
The five square art gallery displays and sells original paintings, drawings, sketches, giclées, prints, sculptures, carvings, folk art, and greeting cards. Its offerings range from works on paper to three-dimensional pieces. Visitors interested in different art forms will find a variety of media and subjects at the gallery.
The Harry L. Johnson Museum is at the end of Park Lane in Windward Side’s historic quarter. It is housed in a 19th-century cottage that belonged to a sea captain. The building connects the museum’s location with a specific part of local history: a former captain’s house in a historic quarter.
In Marie De Saba’s workshop, handmade, one-of-a-kind jewelry is made from seeds that Marie grows in her garden or collects on Saba. The workshop is located in a typical Saban cottage overlooking the museum grounds and is also the owner’s home. Marie De Saba also offers jewelry repairs; confirm this service directly before visiting.
Create and discover together
Every Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m., a group of women work together at Lambee’s Place in the heart of Windward Side, making new Saban creations. Visitors can sit down and watch the women work and create. Since this offering takes place at a regular Thursday time, check before your visit whether the program is currently running.
The Saba Heritage Center organizes weekly activities for young people. These include skeleton reconstructions, photography workshops, excavations, camping trips, lessons on identifying trees, and workshops; the program also includes an exhibition on the use of indigo. The activities are intended for young people. If you are planning a visit around them, confirm the current program in advance.
Hiking on Saba
The trails described on Saba vary both in duration and difficulty. The Mount Scenery Trail is a challenging hike of about two and a half hours; access is in Windward Side, opposite the Trail Shop. The Flat Point Trail to the Tidepools is an easy, 30-minute walk from the road below the airport toward Cove Bay to a rocky ledge overlooking the pools. However, descending to the Tidepools requires steep scrambling over rocks. The short time given for the walk to the ledge should therefore not be confused with the descent to the pools. Before hiking, check current trail recommendations and, for the Flat Point Trail, also check sea conditions.
