Yangon offers different ways to experience the city: colonial-era architecture, religious buildings, market visits, and journeys by train or river. Consider whether you would like to spend more time in the city centre, visiting pagodas and historic buildings, or on a journey. This will help you tailor your stay to the experiences that interest you most.
Explore the City Centre on Foot
The city centre, with its colonial-era buildings, is best explored on foot. Visitors looking to focus on the architecture will find this a different way to experience the city than the Yangon Circular Railway. Visitors can travel the 46-kilometre route, which offers glimpses into the daily lives of city residents. The two options therefore have different focuses: exploring on foot centres on the buildings in the city centre, while the train journey offers a glimpse into everyday life in the city. If you plan to take the train, check the current timetable in advance.
Colonial Buildings and Pagodas
The Yangon City Heritage List includes nearly 200 buildings, among them religious buildings, old pagodas, and British colonial buildings. It therefore extends beyond colonial architecture and also offers points of interest for travellers interested in religious buildings. Kabar Aye Pagoda is one of Yangon’s sacred sites. Other pagodas to consider visiting include Mae La Mu, Koe Htet Kyi, Swal Daw, Ngar Htat Gyi, Arr Lein Ngar Sint, and Mindama. This lets you focus your cultural visit more narrowly on pagodas or more broadly on different types of buildings.
Market, Park and River Journey
Bogyoke Market is considered Yangon’s most popular market and has more than 2,000 shops; this number may change. The market offers a distinct focus alongside exploring the architecture and pagodas. People’s Park features, among other things, a water fountain show and a planetarium. If either of these offerings is a deciding factor for your visit, check its current availability beforehand. People’s Park is west of the Shwedagon Pagoda. Its location provides a point of reference when viewing both attractions on a map of Yangon.
River cruises travel along the city’s waterways. Along the way, you can see the lighthouse on the Twante Canal and the Shwedagon Pagoda from a different perspective. Early morning and the last hours of the day are considered particularly suitable times. Before making plans, check whether a suitable trip is available. Compared with the train journey, a river cruise focuses on the waterways and views of the lighthouse and pagoda; the Yangon Circular Railway offers glimpses into the daily lives of city residents.
