Pa-Lyan Gate, central Naung-Tong Lake and local festival traditions give Keng Tung a variety of reasons to visit. City history and temples, a walk around the center, and festival customs appeal to different travel interests. When planning, you can weigh whether architecture, scenery or a particular festival date should be the focus.
City Gates, Temples and Streetscape
The historic Pa-Lyan Gate is in Ward 2 and is the only surviving structure among Keng Tung’s twelve original city gates, built by the Sawbwa. Keng Tung Haw Nan houses archival photographs of the Sawbwas, a royal ceremonial drum, a throne and a royal bed used by former rulers.
Wat Ho Khone is a Shan-style temple and monastery, located opposite the Maha Myat Muni Temple. Its architecture is influenced by temples of the Shan-Lanna Kingdom from the 13th century. Keng Tung’s main street is lined with colonial-era shops, bungalows and churches. The city has more than 30 Buddhist temples, known as wat in Shan; this number may change over time.
The Tai Khun are described as the largest ethnic group in the area around Keng Tung. This description refers to the wider area, not just the city.
A Walk Around the Lake and the Basin’s Landscape
Naung-Tong Lake is in the center of Keng Tung. A 1,900-meter-long walkway goes around the lake and offers a specific option for a walk in town. Hills surround the lake, with mountains in the distance beyond them around the Keng Tung Basin. Before setting out for a walk, it is advisable to check the current condition of the path.
Market Rhythms, Festivals and Local Cuisine
Community markets in Shan State traditionally take turns: each town or village holds a market every five days. If you plan to visit a market, check the specific date in advance. This lets you incorporate the regional market tradition into your travel plans without assuming a particular current market day.
Tazaung-daing, also known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Tazaung-mon, which usually falls in November. Because the date follows the lunar calendar, the exact day varies. During the festival, people celebrate on Keng Tung’s main streets, and songs and dances are performed near the temples. At Akha New Year celebrations, Akha women wear traditional, helmet-like headdresses; colorful Akha costumes are also on display.
One historical account dates the Thingyan Water Festival in Keng Tung to 1410 and links the celebration to drought and forest fires that reportedly severely affected the area at the time. Shan noodles are readily available at street stalls in Keng Tung and offer another culinary point of interest for travelers.
