Hpa-An brings together a range of travel interests: Buddhist cave art, a pilgrimage cave with a natural spring, traditional Karen dishes at the Riverside Night Market, and the challenging climb up Mt. Zwegabin. The market is in Hpa-An; several caves and the mountain are in the surrounding area. The specific distances from the town make it easier to consider each destination individually. This way, you can decide whether culture, religious practice, food or a physically demanding activity should be the focus of your trip.

Cave Art and Cultural History

Kawkathaung Cave is near the village of Kawkathaung, about seven miles from Hpa-An. It contains 28 Buddha images and votive tablets, as well as a stone pillar entwined with dragon sculptures. Other features include standing Buddha images, crocodile and turtle statues, the Ye Mingyi Buddha image, a shrine to the Sayadaw and a reliquary chamber. Small caves where monks of old meditated add to the cave complex.

At Ratheepyan Cave in Barr Kap Village, about three miles from Hpa-An, the scale provides a different point of emphasis: votive tablets three to four inches high and Buddha images five to six feet high are placed on the cave wall inside and on the rock face outside. While Kawkathaung is distinguished by its different types of images, statues and places of worship, at Ratheepyan the focus is on the varying dimensions and the placement inside and outside the cave.

Kawgunn Cave is in Kawgunn Village, about eight miles from Hpa-An. In 2008, the Ministry of Culture designated the cave an “Ancient Monumental Zone” and a “Protected and Preserved Zone” to protect its ancient cultural heritage. Saddan Cave, about 20 miles from Hpa-An, is considered an important cave with rich Buddhist art and architecture. While Kawgunn offers a specifically dated history of protection, the focus at Saddan is on the cultural significance of its art and architecture.

Pilgrimage, Landscape and the Climb

At Bayintnyinaung Cave, about twelve miles from Hpa-An, the focus is on pilgrimage: pilgrims visit to pray and bathe in a natural spring. This makes it a different kind of destination from caves whose main features are their artworks and architecture.

Mt. Zwegabin is one of the more physically demanding options near Hpa-An: the climb to the summit via a steep staircase takes two hours. This makes it markedly different from the cultural cave destinations. If you are weighing art appreciation against a challenging activity, you can consider the climb as a separate focus.

Kyarinn Hill near Hpa-An is considered a place where natural beauty and traditional culture come together. It offers a landscape and cultural connection alongside the religious caves and the clearly defined summit climb at Mt. Zwegabin.
