Podgorica combines a distinctive Old Town history with art collections and activities on Gorica Hill. In the city, historic buildings sit alongside galleries, a natural history exhibition and routes for walking, cycling and triathlon. This gives you several themes to choose from when planning your trip: cultural history, art and nature experiences; traditional specialties add to the options in the Old Town.

Old Town and Historic Buildings

From 1474 to 1879, during the Ottoman period, the Old Town was the urban center of Podgorica. The Clock Tower was built in the 18th century by Hadži Mehmed-paša Osmanagić. Podgorica’s old hammam also dates from the Ottoman period and was built in the Oriental style. The dates and architectural styles offer different insights into the city’s historical character.

At the foot of Gorica Hill stands the Church of St. George, built between the 9th and 11th centuries. The Sastavci Stone Bridge is believed to date from Roman times and is considered Podgorica’s oldest bridge. Both structures add further historical landmarks to the story of the Old Town.

The Petrović Palace was a former residence of the Petrović dynasty and was built in 1891; today it is designated a cultural monument. Čubranović House is legally protected as an important cultural and historical site. At Kuslev’s House, by contrast, the focus is on its architecture: it is one of the few surviving examples of authentic Balkan architecture from the early 20th century. The house features the exhibition “Kuslev’s House – a Journey Through Time.”

Galleries and Exhibitions

There are several different places to visit for art and natural history. These include the Modern Gallery, the Risto Stijović Gallery in the Old Town, and the Natural History Museum of Montenegro’s permanent exhibition “When Nature Speaks.” Together, these venues cover a range of interests, from visual art to nature.

The Centre of Contemporary Art of Montenegro has a collection of more than 1,000 exhibits from 60 countries. This international scope sets it apart from the more locally or thematically focused offerings of the other venues mentioned. If you are planning a stay with a particular focus on culture, you can treat the collections and historic buildings as different stops in your itinerary.

Trails, Hills and Activities

Gorica Hill has trails for walking, cycling and triathlon. The hill also features a Mediterranean garden with endemic species. These offer different ways to get active alongside a botanical attraction, without requiring a particular route.

The circular route around Korita starts in Podgorica and is 65 kilometers long. A 4-kilometer kayaking route on the Zeta near Podgorica is listed as taking about two hours. This gives you options of different scales for planning: a long route and a water-based activity with a defined duration. The approximate kayaking time provides a practical guide for planning your schedule.

Dajbabe Monastery is also near Podgorica. A natural cave serves as the site of the church. The location adds a distinctive architectural setting to the area’s historical and cultural attractions.

Traditional Specialties in the Old Town

The Old Town offers traditional specialties at authentic restaurants and cafés. If you would like to plan for culinary experiences alongside the buildings and collections, this is a theme in its own right for your time in Podgorica. You can tailor your trip to the interests that matter to you: historic sites, art and exhibitions, activities on Gorica Hill, or a combination of these.
