Water experiences in Plužine vary considerably: Lake Piva offers water sports on calm waters, while kayaking on the fast-flowing waters of the Piva and Tara rivers is offered as an adventure activity for adrenaline lovers. Rafting on the Tara is considered the municipality’s most attractive tourism product. Beyond the water, cultural sites, marked routes and wildlife watching reveal other sides of the region.

Water experiences at Lake Piva and on the rivers

Lake Piva offers particularly good conditions for water sports on calm waters. Those who prefer leisurely kayaking will find it a suitable option; boat trips on the lake are also among the activities available to visitors. There is also a 1,400-metre-long zipline at Lake Piva in Plužine.

Cultural history in Plužine

Because the Piva River was flooded and a hydroelectric power plant was built, Piva Monastery was relocated to Sinjac. The original frescoes were transferred as well. The monastery treasury is one of the richest in Montenegro. It contains valuable collections of old manuscript books, as well as books printed earlier in the Balkans. These include the only surviving Psalter from the Obod printing house.

Another cultural landmark is the Kula Lazara Sočice in Goransko, which has protected cultural heritage status. Together with the monastery’s remarkable history, it shows that the municipality’s cultural heritage is not limited to a single building.

Piva Nature Park: wildlife watching and exploring

Piva Nature Park covers a significant part of the Municipality of Plužine, accounting for 39 percent of its area. The park has two platforms for observing wild animals and another for birdwatching. As the condition and access to the platforms may change, it is best to check the latest information before visiting.

The management plan for 2021–2025 lists more than 15 marked hiking and/or cycling routes with information boards. The Plužine–Stabna–Veliki Vito mountain trail is designated as a marked mountain route. As trail conditions may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.

Lakes and distinctive landscapes

The Stabanska Lakes are scenic glacial lakes about 20 kilometres from the town of Plužine. From Plužine, they can be reached via a path along the Vrbnica and the Stabanski stream. The lakes are rich in trout and are frequently visited by sport anglers.

Sušičko Lake on Durmitor is a seasonal lake: when the Sušica River dries up, the lake’s water disappears too. This sets it apart from a body of water whose level merely fluctuates and makes its distinctive nature easy to understand.

Climbing in the Piva climbing area

The Piva climbing area in the municipality of Plužine has two sectors with 61 climbing routes, including two multi-pitch routes. If you plan to climb there, check the latest route conditions before visiting, as they may change.
