Pljevlja combines religious architectural history and museum collections with green spaces and mountain scenery. In town, the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, the Husein Pasha Mosque and the Local History Museum offer different ways to explore the past. Vodice Park and Milet Bašta offer a different focus; on Ljubišnja, activities include hiking, mountain biking and winter pursuits. Which of these aspects interests you most can help you start planning your stay.

Monastery, Mosque and Museum

The Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Pljevlja was built in 1537. The monastery church took on its present appearance in 1876. The monastery holds the status of a cultural asset of national importance, confirmed in February 2026. The church houses the reliquary and hand relic of Saint Sava. The two dates mark different milestones: 1537 is the year the monastery was built, and 1876 is the year the church took on its present form.

The Husein Pasha Mosque is located in the town centre. It was built in 1569 to designs by the master builder Hajrudin; its minaret is 42 metres high. Together with the monastery, it offers a concrete insight into architectural history across different centuries, while the two buildings do not share the same period of construction or architectural history.

The Pljevlja Local History Museum is a comprehensive museum founded in 1952, with nearly 5,000 objects. Its archaeological, ethnological, historical and cultural history departments present human life in the Pljevlja area from the Palaeolithic, more than 40,000 years ago, through to later periods. Occasional themed exhibitions complement the collections. The museum’s historical focus therefore differs from that of the buildings: here, objects and periods are at the centre, while the buildings are individual religious structures.

Green Spaces in Town

Milet Bašta is in the heart of Pljevlja and is connected to Vodice Park. Milet Bašta is one of the oldest public green spaces in the Balkans. A restaurant at Milet Bašta serves national cuisine; the specific offerings may change.

Vodice Park covers 12 hectares and is located on the former estate of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity. The grounds include two artificial lakes and a fish pond. There are also fitness, cycling and walking trails. The different features can help you get your bearings: the park’s size, its bodies of water and its trails describe different aspects of the same grounds, while the site’s former use creates a historical connection to the monastery.

Mountain Scenery and Seasonal Activities

Pljevlja lies partly within Durmitor National Park. On Ljubišnja, the trail network is fully marked for hiking and mountain biking. In winter, activities include snowshoeing and sledging. The summit of Dernjačište on Velika Ljubišnja offers views of the surrounding mountains and canyons. The activities described also vary by season: hiking and mountain biking are available alongside the winter pursuits specifically mentioned.

At Meandri Ćehotine, viewpoints overlook the winding river. The Đurđevića Tara Bridge is also a tourist attraction in the nearby area. These landscape destinations add viewpoints and nature experiences to Pljevlja’s cultural and urban themes, without implying a fixed order for visiting them.
