In Vraćenovići, Stećci in various forms stand alongside the rural accommodation and dining offered at Starevina. For planning, this provides two specific points of reference: the composition of the monument groups and the choice between a double bungalow and an apartment. The Church of Saint George on the shore of Lake Bileća offers another cultural perspective.

Stećci Along the Road from Petrovići to Bileća

Vraćenovići has three Stećak sites along the road from Petrovići to Bileća. The first site comprises eight undecorated slabs and one chest-shaped monument decorated with arcades and columns. At another nearby site, there are 35 monuments: 26 slabs and nine tall chest-shaped monuments.

The comparison shows differences in both size and form: the smaller group, with one decorated chest-shaped monument, is followed by a significantly larger group in which tall chests stand alongside slabs. This makes it possible to see the variety of Stećci here through specific forms, rather than viewing them as a uniform group. If you are planning to visit the sites, check their condition and visitor access in advance; both can change.

The Church on Lake Bileća and Nearby Cultural Sites

The Church of Saint George on Val is part of Vraćenovići in Montenegro and lies on the shore of Lake Bileća. It is considered a symbol of the shared life of Serbs from Montenegro and Herzegovina. Alongside the funerary monuments, it offers a distinct cultural connection tied to a specific place on the lakeshore.

Crvena stijena, a Palaeolithic archaeological site, is also near Vraćenovići. Kosierevo Monastery is nearby as well. These places broaden the cultural context of a stay with archaeological and monastic themes; however, their mention alone does not indicate access or visiting conditions.

Accommodation, Dining and Walking

Starevina offers accommodation in Vraćenovići in double bungalows and apartments. The property includes a small-scale cheese dairy that produces cheese on site. Traditional dishes include kačamak, cicvara, cheese pies, greens, apples, pršut and sausage. The combination of accommodation, cheese production and cuisine gives Starevina a distinctly rural character.

Walking along country roads is another activity supported by Starevina. Starevina is also recommended to motorcycle travellers. This brings together different interests: a stay connected to local production and traditional food, walks in the countryside, or accommodation that also appeals to motorcycle travellers. Vraćenovići is also near the border crossing into Bosnia and Herzegovina. This provides a geographical point of reference without presupposing any particular route or connection.

More to Explore in the Wider Nikšić Destination

The wider Nikšić destination offers further nature and cultural themes. Since 2011, Lake Fest has brought music lovers together on the shore of Lake Krupačko in Nikšić. Trebjesa was designated a protected natural asset and natural monument in 2000. It has a 5.8-kilometre circular mountain biking trail; Trebjesa is also a picnic area in a park forest, a few hundred metres from Nikšić city centre.

Lukavica is a plateau in the northeast of Nikšić Municipality. High mountains, fields, lakes and 365 springs shape the landscape. National and local hiking trails, as well as the national TT4 cycling route, run through the area. Lukavica is considered one of Europe’s most important plant habitats. For trip planning, this regional context offers its own hiking, cycling and nature themes.

The cultural heritage of the wider Nikšić destination is also diverse: the Lapidarium is an acropolis of Stećci, old tombstones from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, and a distinctive cultural asset of the municipality. Bedem is the remains of a Roman fortress from the 4th century; various cultural and artistic programmes take place there.
