A notable cultural and historical landmark in Donji Orahovac is the Church of Saint George. It is a protected cultural monument and contains preserved wall decorations and frescoes depicting saints and biblical scenes. The frescoes are associated with 16th- and 17th-century architecture and painting.

Protection dates back to 1957; register entries date from 1961 and 1986. These years belong to the legal history of the cultural monument, not to the time when the frescoes were created. This distinguishes their artistic classification from the later history of their protection.

Kotor as a regional cultural and landscape setting

The natural and cultural landscape region lies within the wider travel destination of Kotor, in the Bay of Kotor on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast. It covers 14,600 hectares and two interconnected bays; the mountains rise rapidly to almost 1,500 metres. In this landscape, fortified and open towns, settlements, palaces and monasteries are combined with cultivated terraces on the slopes of high, rocky hills. The coastline, mountain ranges and built-up areas together make up the landscape.

Kotor itself is an authentically preserved small town whose urban planning is integrated into the landscape. Following the 1979 earthquake, the region’s most important monuments and historic urban areas were carefully restored and reconstructed under UNESCO’s auspices. The regional heritage perspective therefore encompasses urban planning, historic urban areas and individual buildings.

Kotor’s local mountain trail network includes the 10-kilometre Kotor–Krstac–Njeguši trail; its route designation was approved in 2020. This figure refers to the trail’s length, not the walking time. Check local conditions before setting out.

The traditional winter carnival provides a reliable seasonal reference: it takes place in Kotor every year in February. Check the exact dates for your travel year. The main public celebration of Saint Tryphon, the patron saint of Kotor and the Diocese of Kotor, is considered the only surviving medieval religious urban event in present-day Montenegro.

Since 2002, KotorArt has focused on art music and, since 2009, has also encompassed many other areas of the arts. Outside the summer festival, the programme includes projects, workshops, lectures and publications. If you are planning to attend a specific event, check its dates and accessibility.

Museums also offer tangible historical insights into the region’s cultural heritage. The original collection of the Maritime Museum of Montenegro in Kotor was opened to the public in 1900. The Perast City Museum is housed in the Palace of Captain Vicko Bujović. The palace dates from 1694. The museum preserves extensive archival material on Perast’s history from the mid-15th century onwards.
