Kumbor combines a distinct coastal character with a maritime past. Portonovi, historic traces of aviation and the broader opportunities in the Herceg-Novi destination offer different starting points for planning a trip. First consider whether your main interest is the coast, local history or additional nature experiences.
Portonovi: Coast, Beach and Marina
The Portonovi complex in Kumbor occupies the site of a former military base. It has 1.8 kilometres of coastline and a sandy beach. The marina has 238 berths and can accommodate yachts and superyachts up to 140 metres long. This makes the beach and harbour distinct aspects of a coastal stay; at the same time, the site's former military use remains part of the area's history.
The Kumbor-Portonovi Marina also has a border crossing that operates around the clock. The police, customs and harbour master's office are among the authorities involved in border control. Check the latest service information before travelling if you plan to use this crossing.
Wellness and Cuisine in Portonovi
Portonovi is home to Europe's first One&Only resort. It includes the Chenot Espace Spa, which offers medical treatments; individual treatments and their availability may change. The culinary offering also goes beyond a single theme: Portonovi's restaurants and bars serve Mediterranean cuisine, Asian fusion and modernised Eastern cuisine, including fish and meat specialities. The dining mix may change. This means that, alongside a stay by the water, wellness and food are among the distinct interests catered to by Portonovi.
Maritime History and Hillside Park
Kumbor appears in Venetian documents from 1758 under the name “Combur”. The Kumbor seaplane base was established in 1914. Hillside Park is home to a monument to the 28 pilots, observers and mechanics of the 3rd Seaplane Command who died in the service of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The monument is dedicated to them. The park also retains the layout of its historic garden paths and incorporates existing trees into its design. Local history, aviation commemoration and garden design each offer visitors a distinct historical perspective.
A Route through Coastal Landscapes and Hilly Terrain
The Summer-Rise Route follows coastal paths, passes through woodland and crosses hilly terrain to the “1. maj” viewpoint, which offers panoramic views across the Bay of Boka. The changing landscape makes the route a distinct nature experience alongside a beach stay. For hikers, the sequence of shoreline, woodland and hillside sections is its defining feature.
Within the Wider Herceg-Novi Destination
Orjen Nature Park broadens the view of the wider Herceg-Novi destination with a mountain landscape. It lies in the hinterland of Herceg Novi, on Mount Orjen. A dense network of marked trails ranges from easy walking paths to routes for experienced mountaineers. From the centre of Herceg Novi, a marked trail leads to the nature park in less than two hours on foot. Orjen's protected status is based mainly on its many endemic plant species, including the munika pine. This mountain and hiking perspective is part of the wider Herceg-Novi destination and complements Kumbor's coastal and historical themes.
