The archaeological landscape of Orheiul Vechi lies in the east-central part of Moldova, in the gorge of the lower Răut, 14 kilometres upstream from the confluence of the Răut and the Dniester. Its history is revealed in its buildings and archaeological traces, as well as along routes beside the river.
Monastery, Citadel and Museums
Visitors enter the Peștera Cave Monastery by a staircase. The entrance is near the bell tower on the ridge above the village of Butuceni. As access conditions may change, check the latest information before your visit. The medieval citadel was the residence of a Mongol ruler from 1366 to 1369. The medieval Caldarâm along the route also dates from the period of Tatar-Mongol occupation in the 14th century.
The museums offer insights into different aspects of regional history. The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology has two permanent exhibitions featuring around 186 archaeological and anthropological objects, as well as two human skeletons. The Ethnographic Museum in Butuceni preserves the type of Moldovan peasant house typical of this area in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Casa meșteșugarilor Museum is housed in a rural residence built in 1931.
Bath No. II, also known as the Turkish Bath, is the largest of three urban baths discovered during archaeological excavations at Orheiul Vechi. The history of Curchi Monastery includes a tradition with a specific date: according to the account, the monastery was founded in 1773, when Iordache Curchi (Curchiu) took monastic vows under the name Joan and founded a skete there. The tradition thus preserves both the name and the story of the founding.
Routes, River and Activities
Several marked hiking and cycling routes pass through villages and natural areas, as well as along the Răut. One route with specific start and end points is Drumul Dragonului: it begins at Baia tătărească at the entrance to Trebujeni and ends at Muzeul Arheologic din Orheiul Vechi at the entrance to the village of Butuceni. The route is 4.6 kilometres long, takes one hour and 30 minutes, and is graded easy to moderate. A planned five-kilometre trail between Rîșcova and Ivancea was intended to pass through the forest belonging to Orhei National Park and to be suitable for beginners on foot or by bicycle.
A typical kayak route on the Răut through Orheiul Vechi is 16.5 kilometres long and usually takes five to six hours. It therefore requires a longer time commitment than Drumul Dragonului. Seasonal availability may change; check before your trip. Bicycles can be rented at the administrative complex of the Orheiul Vechi Cultural and Natural Reserve at the entrance to the village of Butuceni. Those looking for a guided activity can find climbing expeditions where qualified instructors teach basic techniques. For paragliding, you launch from a mountainside and glide down to the river valley. Check the availability of the climbing expeditions offered in advance.
The Trebujeni Landscape Reserve is protected nationwide. As a broader regional setting, Orhei National Park brings together scenic landscapes, ancient forests, archaeological sites and historic monasteries across 18 localities in the Orhei region. This highlights the contrast between individual archaeological discoveries and a wider landscape perspective, without grouping the sites together as a single attraction.
Local Cuisine and Practical Information
Guesthouse owners in the Old Orhei area offer cooking classes on traditional bread, sarmale and colțunași. Participation depends on host availability. Brănești Winery also offers a culinary experience: its underground stone restaurant serves traditional Moldovan food. Offerings may change; check what is currently available before visiting.
For getting around by public transport, there are connections towards Chișinău and Orhei from the municipality of Piatra and from Furceni. Check the timetables again before travelling. This lets you consider cultural history, routes and regional cuisine as different interests for your trip, without having to experience every attraction in the same way.
