Chisinau offers a range of ways to enjoy a cultural stay: collections spanning prehistory to the present day, historic buildings, concerts, a tourist trolleybus route and parks with distinctive landscape features. This gives you a basis for arranging your days around your interests, rather than treating all the places as equivalent stops.
History and Art Across the Ages
The National Museum of History of Moldova preserves 348,619 objects covering the history of Moldova from prehistory to the present day. The collection therefore spans a broad period. The National Art Museum of Moldova in Chisinau offers a different perspective: it also displays artworks from prehistory to the present day. The time periods overlap, but the subjects differ. Here, the focus is on Moldova’s history; there, on art from different eras. If you are interested in both areas, you can think of them as distinct cultural highlights.
Buildings, Busts and the City’s History
The 13-metre-high Triumphal Arch is a distinctive structure with a clearly specified height. The Alley of Classics offers a different focus: it was inaugurated in 1957 in the Public Garden with twelve busts of classical writers and poets. One is a single monument; the other is a cultural place defined by a series of busts. Măzărache Church is considered the oldest building in Chisinau. Together, these places offer different points of interest if you are interested in buildings, literary commemoration or the city’s history.
The Water Tower also combines a specific height with a cultural function: it is 27 metres high and offers views of present-day Chisinau. From 1971 to the present day, the tower has housed the City Museum of Chisinau. Its long-term use as a museum is therefore another focus alongside its height. Comparing it with the 13-metre-high Triumphal Arch gives you two different scales for buildings in the city, without implying a set order for visiting them.
Parks with Distinctive Landscape Features
For choosing a park, it helps to look at the specific differences. Valea Morilor Park includes an artificial lake, a cascade staircase and a pedestrian staircase with 218 steps. Valea Trandafirilor Park, by contrast, has three natural lakes and rose gardens. This presents two different landscapes: an artificial lake with staircases on one side, and several natural lakes and rose gardens on the other. You can choose based on which of these features appeals to you more.
Concerts and Getting Around
Following its renovation, Green Theatre hosts concerts featuring nationally and internationally known artists. This adds an events perspective to the museums and historic places. There is also tourist sightseeing trolleybus route No. 1 for exploring the city. If you would like to include this route in your plans, check the timetable in advance.
Information about attractions, events, accommodation, excursions and routes, as well as tourist guidebooks, is available for Chisinau and the country. When choosing a hotel, you can start by deciding what matters most to you: would you like to focus mainly on historical collections and buildings, are you interested in parks, or would you also like to plan for a concert? This way, your search starts with the experiences that matter for your stay.
